as much dependent on his business for
a source of living as the merchant,
farmer or other person, and y«t there is
no attempt made to regulate the prices
of goods or products of the soil.
We have never heard of any attempt
to enforce or introduce this unjust law
in any of tljc counties save Aiken, and
it was never tried here save in one or
two instances, as we refused to be gov
erned by it. insisting upon a more lib
eral tariff of prices, which was readiiy
agreed to by a majority of the Rar,
Judge of Probate, Sheriff and other
county officials.
Another of our contemporaries the
Carolina Spartan in speaking of the
law says it is simply a piece of presump
tions ignorance on the part of the Leg
islature or of public officers to undertake
to regulate or prescribe rules for the
regulation of any jegitiqiate enterprise
farther than arises by just am} fair com
petition, and this without doubt ii the
opinion of the entire Press of the State.

A bill regulating the mode of con
ducting capital punishment has passed
the house by a large majority and will
no doubt become a law. It reads as

follows:
Sec. 1. That ot; and after the pas
sage of this act, when the punishment of
death is inflicted upon any person pur
suant to tho sentence of any court, the
execution shall take place within the
enclosure, of the jail of the county
wherein such execution shall be made.
$co. 2 That no one shall be allowed
to be present at sqch execution except
the sheriff of the county or his deputy,
aud his assistants, the clergy, the state
solicitor, the attorney or attorneys who
defended the convict, and not mote than
two or three persons to be named by the
sheriff.

The Moffett Registory Bill is said to

large revenue to the State. Our Legis
lative solous are moving in the matter,
