Before crossing the threshold of another year, it is well to look back' Avard end review the past. The treasure house of wisdom is filled with the fruits of experience, curclully culled and gar nered, and wcumulutcd knowledge is the glor y of hun;au kind. During the eleven mouths just passed, tops has iiad full dominion over the farmer. She has colored every picture and gilded every prospect. Against numerous failures, she held up a bright picture of suecest for the future, and inspired confidence in the face of tre- mendous odds* But she can no longer deceive—fact*, very stubborn facte, rise up and will not down at the farmer's bidding. la too many cases, haif filled barns and cribs, and empty smoke hoiue stare? him in the face. II is poor ab..3e d fields reproachfully say : thou art a hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown (manure)—here are the fruits of thy ubor and money, but no profits. The ncrchaut clamors: pay me what thou west—and when the bacon and corn nd other thi >gs needed to make the rop are paid for, thousands of farmers ud them selves with empty pockets, and 1 their labor gone for naught,* We >pa however, that just in proportion as eir pockets arc empty, their heads may j filled with increased knowledge and rcatcr wisdom, that they will study dis- n sionatcly ihe causes of failure, and irefully avoid self-dccepiiog. It is urd LO say, “ I did wrong,” but very aanly. I'crhaps it is harder stiH—fo- :hangc one's course -we own the wrohg, flock* of sheep and cows, might also be very profitably extended* ’! he demand for these is great and increasing con stantly, and would in or care still more, if it could be supplied with acclimated animals. Many are deUrrcd from pur— chasing, from the fear of lo-s by import ing aubmil# from the North. On tin- point, we make the following suggestions in {Missing, Where a southern raised bull c mint bo had. buy an animal old enough for service—bring him < ut in October, and n-e him as extensively as possible at once. Seven or eight months cl’good service can thus be had. Does an) one know whether an animal, thus imported, can be returned noithward, say in May, AAithont suffering from climate chungvs ‘f Rut, should a bull die after 7 or 8 months service, the less, if divided out among the farmers of a neiahhorho d, would be small —and they Av.-uld really lose nothing, for his service would be ivo-th 85-00 a cow, and each one might secure it on t,wo or moie cows. If he t.houid not die. lie could, after be ing used a year or two, be sold very readily for as much as his original cost. We write from actual experience oa thi ; point. Touching current fi.rui ivork, little need be said, except to urge the full completion of the year’s opera 1 ions, gathering and h using all crops, leaving nothing to embarrass the work of the next year. lie ready to welcome it with all debts and obligations discharged— hands and merchants paid off, the reason able wants of the family supplied, and, on the night of the 31st, lie down with the sweet assurance that you owe no man Tax IsTotice, Off cf. In this tiino, by the kindness of Ins 'iianvcr his bright iutciigence, the great interest he took in agricultural matters and the pleasant ivay in which he conversed on them attracted all man ner of men tow ards him, and considering the few years he had been among us we know of no man Avho had made so many and such devoted friends. This was evidenced by the large concourse of people that attended his funeral service, w hich took place at St. Thaddous church last Monday.
