ADMISSION OK GEN. BUTLER.
The admission of Gen. M. C. Butler
to the United States Senate gives great
satisfaction all over the State. Senator
Butler arrived in Columbia from \\ ash-
ingtou on Monday evening, Dec. 3d,
where he was congratulated on all sides.
It is no doubt.truc, and his friends do
not hesitate to say, that, despite the
justness of his cause, he would have
stood a slim chance before the Radical
majority in the Senate if it had not been
been fur bis own bold and sagacious
management of his ease,
SENATOR I’ATTERSON,
otherwise known as “Honest John”,
l
stood manfully by Gen. Butler in the
fight, and made the first speech that
ever attracted any attention in the Sen
ate. He gave a slap at Conkling and
a kick at Edmonds and then proceeded
to pitch into President Hays’ policy
with a vengeance, a-id when ho had
concluded his animated speech which
at times is said to have arisen to the
violent pitch of a storm, it was found io
the astonishment of all that the Presi
dent and his policy had no friend or de
fender in the Senate. The impression
produced by the day, among the most
candid and impartial aieu Is that the
president has suffered a most complete
and ignomious defeat, not merely for
himself and bis nominations but far his
policy. That, at least, men Jsay, ought
to have found an immediate defend r
on the Republican si lo. It was not
fit if it had any Republican friends,
that they should remain silent upon
such an occasion.
THE LATEST.
From a special telegram received from
Columbia we learn that the Legislature
yesterday elected the following officers ;
Col. A. C, Haskell, Associate Justice;
H<sn. W. H. Wallace, Judge Seventh
Circuit; Leroy F Youmans, Attnrmy
General, and C. L. Kerrison, Register of
Mesne Conveyance for Chprleston.
