W A ns INC,ton, Nov. Cth.—The House
of Ro’/rcsentativcs has p t>seJ the SU-
ver Bill, by 103to 34 votes. T!|e weight
of a silver dollar, which was the dollar
of our fathers, is to be 412i grains troy
cfstandard stiver, as provided in the
act of 1337. It is thought that the
financial question will overshadow every
other issue which will come up during
the present session. The onti resump,
tion party is now strongly in the major
ity, and it is thought that majority will
be maintained end the Ewing Bid s
amended with a bill for the remonetizing
uf silver although they may hang fire
for a while in the Senate, will pass at
the present session.
In tho Fen.-.i the Lousiana eases
still drag • hair slow iu.ogtU along. The
Repubiicaus. whose maj irity upon a
tilosO party vote has been five, have us-
_’cd tactics to keep the cases jn the c< ui

'the Democratic force in tha Senate.—

and if they'can prevent it, will not per*

they declare that there was no valid elec

the Butler and Corbin c ee in the Foli

Some soils of very close texture, and

never has time to break up all his land

takes place chiefly from the rains and
winds of February and March, it is use
less to defer ploughing till spring, anj
fall ploughing, when (he land is in order
is very dedrable. One very great ad
vantage of tho latter is, that very much
less liability exists, to plough when the
ground is too wot. Another is, the

stiff clays, when ridged, pulverising

As the time is approaching for our
Legislators to wend their way towards
Columb a, would it not be well (o call
their attention to our public schools be
fore starting, in order that they can study
the question, make some inquiries and,
being thus posted, do something for tho
benefit of the teachers ? It is a shame
iliat they have been treated as badly as
.buy haye.
I know a teacher hero who has boon
teaching for several years, and has nc or
been paid up si ice April, 1876. It is
true be did get a little money in August
last, but a mere pittance; and now comes
the tho order to pay no more certificates
until the back ones are paid, say for 'he
ycani i872-’74, amounting to about
§4.000. At the rate the tax is levied
and collected, it will take at least thiee
years to reach the claims of '877. and
in the meantime what arc they to do ’
There is certainly no cncouvapemcnt to
continue on.
I have been a i'K long Democrat, and
yet to the discredit of our Legislature, 1
must say that the Radicals behaved much
better to the creditors of the pub!>c
lun.d than they have dune, it is true
they stole a heap, and levied icry heavy
taxes, but with it ail there was scarcely
any trouble in getting what wa.e due
you.
The public school system I have stud
ied, and look upon it as one of the
grandest fraudes of the 10th century—
mainly on account of the way It is
managed. A child will leant more in
one year at a pay school than they wM
in three years at a public one, and there
are many reasons why I make this as
sertion. I did not start this article to
prove what I have asserted, but merely
to call the attention of the servants of
the people, and to ask them if there is
no way of helping the teachers. It is
utterly impossible for them to live on
promises to pay, and ruinous for tbeni
to labor at such small salaries, an
sell them cents in the dollar, in
order to lirW^fhey had better go at
some other business. The pay of the
farm laborer is superior to it. If wc
could utilize our scrip in the way of
paying taxes, it would be a little benefit,
but to have several hundred dollars
worth of certificates*and then have to
take other funds, or borrow from your
neighbors, as some have done, to L.ee >
their taxes, it as a burning disgrace,
n«>t only on our county, baton our State
and I for one ac an act of justice, and in
behalf of the suffering teachers, call on
you to assist them in getting their pay.
The members of our Legislature never
suffer for their pay—they get the last
dollar before leaving for home always—
and why should we be treated as if we
did not need it, or bad not cained it ?
