Mr. Wjlsvu was a man for whom nature had d n.e much by endowing him with a re markably line physique and great natur al ability ; and although an unlettered man, he was an unexceptionable business in.iti, possessing much shrewdness and business capacity. He accumulated a hue fortune for the times by his owu unaided efforts. Mr. Stcllings said he did not, but directed him to the office of Mr. G. P. Curry, broker.— Mephens proceeded to Mr. Cu.ry.s and presented him a scrip lor thirty five d dlars, issued to him (he is a school teacher in Aiken county) and purport ing 10 be signed by the three l-ehoo] Trustees of a emtain bisirkl, whose signatures were attested by a magistrate and certified to as correct by Her. J. 0. Browne, School Commissioner of Aiken c unty. Mr. Curry bid wiitten to Mr. Browne semo time previously in refer ence to other scrip, and Mr. Browne re plied that all serin certified to by him were all right and would be paid in the Full when tin taxes came* in. Think ing that the s ;p now tendered was gen uine, Nr. Curry raid he would buy it, and oflVred Stephens (ifi; cents on the dollar for it. This < ftVr, after some do. mur, Stephens accepted, and was paid £17.f>0 by Mr. Curry. Stephens then said that he knew other panics in his t-etlion who held scrip and would like to soil it, as they could only exchange it with the merhnautti iu thei: neighbor hood for provisions and could not get money for it. Mr. Curry told him that ho could purchase it, and Stephens then left, promising to return. On the 20th of August lie did return, bringing six scrip, in ail .?i85, purporting to be signed by the school trustees in the several districts, and certified to bv the tf County School Commissioner. Kadi al so contained a written authority fr.un the school teacher, to whom it purport ed to have been issued, to Stephens to sell the scrip and receive the money. Mr. Curry bought the scrip, giving SteplKui.- $92.50. In the years JS76-’77 the State cf North Carolina produced 125,000 bushels of peanuts ; Virginia 780,000 bushels, and Tennessee 5000,00O bushels. The Uni ted Slater can “point with pride” to the lact that within tkoir border?, 9.220,— 000 bushels of peanuts were har vested.
