of the negro Congressman Smalls, comes
that of State Senator Nash, of Richland
county, otherwise known as “Brick
Nash,” whose testimony before the com

clinches the case against all the high
priests of Radicalism in the State.—
His testimony is the missing link in the
chain of evidence which will unseat
Patterson beyond a peradventure. By
thus making a clean breast of it Nash
saves himself from a term in the Peni

A Request for the S. C. R.R. to
Reduce Freights.—For some time
past, complaints have been heard that
the South Carolina Railroad was charg
ing exhorbitant rates for freight between
this place and Charleston, likewise be
tween Augusta and Aiken, and our at-
teation has been called to the^iame and
to report the proceedings of a meeting
which took place on Tuesday evening
last. The meeting was largely aUended
by the merchants oft he place, and the
feeling was unanimous in favor of re
questing the railroad authorities to ad
just the tariff of prices, ead grant more
iberal rates. If this cannot be done,
they say, they will organise and ship all
their goods by the Atlantic Cost Line,
via. Wilimingtou to Gmniteville, mak
ing a saving thereby of from 25 to 32
per cent. Nearly all the merchants are
now getting their heavy freight from
Charleston by the N. E. R. R., and they
say they make a large saving by it. Two
bis. of sugar by this route, laid down in
Aiken, cost $1.05, and by the S. C- R*
R., $2.95; three sacks of eoffco by N. E.
R. R., cost 50 cts., by the S. C. R. R..
»V5U*, l'~e 1-rrt hy c. il.
, OruoitevUlo 35 cts.* bytlie
8. C. R. R."w Aiken $1.0 0, with simi
lar prices for other be^y; freights. A
committee was appointed to upon
the officers of the South Carolina Rail
road and arrange for more reasonable
freight. As the interest of the town
and the railroad are nearly identical, and
what is detrimental to the one is injurious
to the other, wc presume the railroad
authorities will see the reasonableness
of the request and do what is right and
fair in the matter.
