SHOULD DE KEPT
Matter of Roiatnin^ the Military
Company Ncedek.
Tho matter of holding tho Marl
boro guards in thc state militia is
now up and in fact it is right up
to the town as to whether or not
Bennettsville is to retain tho com
pany. Adjutant and Inspector
General Boyd says that it remains
for tho people of .Bennettsville to
say whether or not the company
is to romain herc and he wants the
matter settled at once as do all the
rest connected with tho case.
On last Tuesday Capt. VV II Mc
Intyre ami a reporter for tho Ad
vocate went to Columbia to see
General Boyd about the company.
But the General was out of the
city on an inspecting tour and a
telegram found him at Greenville
ami he wired that iie would reach
Columbia carly Thursday morning.
Capt. McIntyre remained to sec
him anil did talk the matter over
and General Boyd stated to him
that it remained with the people
of Bennettsville to decide the mat
ter.
Kor sometime there has been a
spirit ol' discontent and resentment
ai thc present standing of the af
fair. Thc town seems to have lost
:;!! interest in the company and
furthermore lhere has been objec
tion expressed tit the Way in which
t ho company was being conducted.

tn ti bid and what thc company was
j! illy doing.
Capt. McIntyre hus now on the.
i oii something over fifty men and
al tho inspection a few days ago
tho company made a creditable
showing according to the statement
of thc inspecting oilicors and they
so roportodjto Gcnoral Boyd. They
stated that there was a great im
provement in tho company since
tho previous inspection. Drills
have been held regulary and each
military order has been carried
out.
The Captain of the company, VV
II McIntyre, says that bebas dono
all that he can to make the com
pany what it should be. That he
has instructed thc members as best
he knew how and his work has
been approved by the superior of
ficers. That ho has done, all he can
to gd the town people interested
and that he wants to see the com
pany the pride of Bennettsville.
ts KN KK AL novo's POSITION.
From a previous conversation
which the reporter had with Gen
eral Boyd tho following is his po
sition: That tin; people of Ben
nettsville do not seem to fake any
interest in the company. That there
has been expressed dissatisfaction
with the present standing and that
he has been endeavoring to get
everything harmonious. Ile. said
that he wanted the company to
stay here but that unless the citi
zens of Bennettsville would take
Some interest and show that they
Wanted it that there was no use in
keeping it here. That .furthermore
there were several other towns in
tho state which were' anxious to
have military companies and they
would jump at the chance of get
ting in Bonnettsville's place. He
said i hat several towns furnished
armories for thc men and that they
took pride in thc company and
wore ready to do all that they
could fer il. | le said that he want
ed to know what thc I rouble. Wits
and he Would endeavor lo remedy
it as tar as he was abb1.
i:<?i ii'MKNT ur.iNi; wtTIIHKI.I).
The coii)p!in,\, as previously
slated, has passed inspection anti
is Waiting I'm- its new equipment.
The equipment is in Columbia but
( tonend Boyd doc ; not fool its if
t he cn i zens of Bennettsville aro
support ?hg tho company and bc is
holding the equipment until furl lt
or developments, It is np to thc
Bennettsville people, and especially
the business men to impress thc
Hilliary department that the. town
is willing and anxious to have the
company and that they will sup
port it.
MILITARY COMPANY NEEDED.
That Iionnottsvillo needs a mili
tary company is obvious. Suppose
thoro should bo soino great out
break, or something happen which
would require military aid, what
could bo done if thc company hore
was out of service i And then too
thcro is no telling when it is need
ed. Right herc at hand they could
bo turned out on short notice and
protect the town and put down thc
law breakers should occasion arise
while if thc company is allowed to
bc removed tho town would have
no protection.
NO CHANCE FOR ANOTHER.
And thc company needs to bc
kept herc for if it is removed then
there will bc no chanco again soon
to have another. As stated before
thcro arc several other towns in
tho state clamoring for a place in
tho militia and they aro willing to
give tho aid needed and to back
up thc company as it should bo.
IMMEDIATE ACTION CALLED FOR.
There should bc sonic action tak
en immediately on the matter. It
is a matter which should person
ally interest every citizen and es
pecially those having property
hore. S<>me plan should be decid
ed on and that at once, (ten Boyd
wants to feel that tho business
men is behind the thing und what
ever is tho present trouble let. him
know and he will take thc proper
stops io see thal everything- is lik
ed nil rigel. In justice to tho com
pany, injustice to Capt. McIntyre,
in justice lo th?: town, in justieo
to < lenora! lloyd, ?uni ?,; justice io
everyone if thoro aro any com
plaints they should i to made known
and that openly. Tho matter de
mands attention ut once, lt is
right up to the town.
