In traveling through tho hill
country of good old South Curo
lina for tho past two weeks, J
thought that 11 letter would he of
interest to sonic of your readers.
J have traveled through !> or 10
counties since leaving home, part
ly hy rail and partly by private
conveyance, but 1 have not seen
anything that will compare with
grand old Marlboro, except the
terrific peals of thunder t hat echo
and reecho over the hills and val
leys Of Edgelield county, the homo
county of J3en Tillman. I don't
blame him to run for Governor
if it thundered while he lived there
like it does now. If I had to live
in the hill country among rho rocks
and rattle snakes, where the clouds
are ten times blacker, with a red
fringed edge and the lightning leap
ing from rock lo rock and hill to
hill, with all the colors and shapes
of a Cl?nese ian, I would get out
from there, if I had to run tor Gov
ernor to do it. I would almost ask

tee, J was asked hy several ol'your
readers why 1 didn't pray for my
self, 1 thought while down there
this crowd needed ii most. But 1
am sonny to say that TILLMAN
doesen't need il up here, anti as I he
clouds are blacker and the thunder

out and made a specialty of myself,
j.vox, LUMPKIN and ANSEL', and, I
hope we will all bc elected, if hot
in this world, in a better one.
J made a trip through the peach
ridge section of S. C-acres and
acres of line peach orchards greet
the eye, loaded with the finest fruit.
Cantaloupes are shipped in largo
quantities from this section, while
there is a very large acreage in
Asparagus. This is certainly a line
.section of S. C., I aili speaking now
of'part of Lexington, Saluda and
Kdgefiold counties.
The crops in this country arc bad
ly damaged by rain and grass. There
cannot possibly be anything like a
full crop made.
I go from here in a few days to
Fort Motto, where 1 will see tho
Peterkins' and Ilcnegan, of our
(anility, with whom I hope to break
bread and eat fried chicken. Will
let you hear from ino again later
