On a recent visit to the State Farm the tallowing condition ol blt dis tire
tented themselves under thc most efficient and painstaking care ol its worthy Sup.
L-rintent Col. D J. Griffith, ol" Columbia. He has on each farm 30J acr.'s in o n
ion and it is a sate calculation and is postively stated that without a mishap to
the crop, he will gather 600 balee ot 500 pounds each. This \isitor has traveled
considerably throughout the State and is a very large planter himself, his princi
pal topic of conversaiionjheing crops, which he admires the beauty ot almost equal
to tair women-both being productions of Nature-and asserts that, without ex
ception, this (arm is a paragon of excellence beyond compare with any in the
State.
Aside from the lact that the cot'.on is generally so very ??oed, there is a40 acre
field on the DeSaussure side on which a special test w is made, with ?.Peruvian
?nano." Previous to this year it has been impossible lo pioiluce any crop thal
vvould make a satisfactory yield on this land, it hardly paying to plant eoiion on
:t; being light soil and full of nut grass They used in producing the handsome.

This 40 acres ol cotton held its color well, dark green, all Outing the hot dry spell

Aside from the cotton crop and notwithstanding the l.ict thal they lost all plant
ng ol tall oats and had it replanted in spiing in hopes ol making a spring crop,
vhich they did not get in until late in the spring, they made a magnificent crop
rf oats and have threshed and have now in bulk in their cap.ici >n ; barn-, probab
y 10.000 bushels The production ol grain on these farms is always in excess ot
COUiremeutS. and ot late years they have gone extensively into raising mules lor
heir own use They now have some 25 head of young mules troth 1 lo 3 yeats
