After Dinner Talks.
The celebration on Friday last
by tho Masonic fraternity of Bon
nettsvillo, was one ot the best
managed social events that has
ever taken pince in our town. The
auditorium was packed at x.;50 to
hear tue public address by Hon.
W. W. Lum kin of Columbia, who
was introduced by Hon J. IT. Hud
son. The address was heartily
enjoyed, BB was also the fine mus
ic by tho Bennet tsville Musical
Club-piano, mandolins, V?O1?UB,&C.
The exercises were opened with
prayer by Rev. Bunyan McLeod,
and closed with tho Benediction
by Rev. T. E. Morris, Dr. J. F.
Kinney presided.
After the address, the fraternity
with invited guest repaired to the
Guards armory Hali where a spe
cial committee with Mesdames
Stockton and Kinney in charge
served refreshments that were
most heartily enjoyed by all,
Col. T. C. Hamer acted as toast
master, Judge C. P. Townsend
responded to "The Day We Cel
ebrate." Col Knox. Livingston
responded to "Our Women." Col.
Lumpkiu, the guest und speaker,
again responded with bis usual
fun, and captured the audience.

A Most Enjoyable Occasion.
The young people ol our town eu
joyed one ol the finest entertainments
hist Wednesday evening that they
have had tho pleasure of enjoying for
some time. It was given at the beauti
ful and lovely homo of Mr. and Mrs.
W. r. Breedon
Al eight thirty o'clock the iuyited
guests began to arrive with their part
ners. They were met at the frontdoor
hy Mr. and Mrs. Breeden and ushered
into a lovely parlor cooled by electric
rans. About nine o'clock all the guests
had arrived and Mrs. Breeden and
thal charming young lady Miss Ly I
( rosland began to pair off tho boys
and girls for them to have a chat for
n minute or two After tho chat Mrs
Breeden made all assemble in the par
lor and then she told us how we were
to select our partners.
Slips of paper had been cut aud on
them were written some wise sayings.
Thc boy or rallier the prince, had just
a part of fhe quotation on Iiis while
his partner, whoever she may be, had
the rest on hers. Tho slips were dis
tributed and then began tho wild
search for partners. Soon it was over
with and al! were satisfied. Then Mrs
Breeden arose again and said that now
ns eaeh prince lind his princess, they
must have a prince and princess to
rule over ali of the princes and
princesses. She then naked her son
Kistler toFelect one. lie selected Mies
Bo3a McMillan. Now Miss McMillan
had ttl select a prince and she selected
Master Henry Bouchier. The l'rince
had tn take thc minor princes and
princesses up and iutroduco them to
the Briners. The name of each mem
ber of the couple hud to hogin with
the letter 1*. Tho place they came
from must begin with tho letter P.
And the presents they were supposed

tin ned into the parlor. Mrs. Breeden

made ready and all served to delicious
cake and cream.
When we all relut ned to the parlor
and Mi>s Lyl Crosland played the
Swanee Uiver and tho young folks
gathered around her and sang.

Fine Opportuiny for Young Mon.
The South Carolina College oilers
scholarships in the Normal Depart
ment to two young men from each
county. Each scholarship is worth
$40 in money, besides remission of
&40 tuition anti ?18 matriculation
or "term" lee. The money is paid
at the rate ol' a month tor eight
mouthy, lo assist in meeting the ne
cessary living expenses.
Examination will bo held Friday
July 8, before tho -'county hoard
of education." Applicants should
bo at least 19 years of age, aud pre

All persons wandering Irom place to
place without any known residence in
thc Town o! Bennettsville who have no
visible or known means ol gaining a tait
honest anti reputable livelihood; all sus
picious persons going about without any
known business; all persons who acquire
a livelihood hy gambling or horse rac
ing without any other visible means ol
gaining a livelihood; also all persons
who lead i tl lu and disorderly lives not
following some handicraft trade or pro
fession, or not having some known or
visible means ol livelihood who shall be
able to work, and all sturdy beggars arc
and shall he deemed vagrants, and upon
conviction thereol shall he lined in a sum
not exceeding One Hundred Dollars or
imprisoned not exceeding 30 days, or
work on thc public roads of Hie town lor
a like number ot days.
