The South Carolina College]
. for Teachers.
Although nearly approaching ito cen
tennial anniversary, the South Carolina
College shows none of the decrepitude
of old age, but ruther increasing signs
of vigorous life. A new departure of
great importance to the College and to
the State has Just' been inaugurated.
For some years the College has had a I
department of pedagogy, for the train
ing of teachers; but last winter, for the |
.nrst time, thc Leg'^lature created
number of endowed normal scholar
ships, one for each county. It le the
intention of the Trustees and Faculty
to. set these scholarships upon a high
plane, and to seek thereby to qualify
superior young men for positions of
leadership and influence In our public '
schools. However largely women may j
bc employed as teachers, the work of
superintendence, direction and control
munt continu? to be mont largely In the |
huuds of thc men; and' lt is to supply
these teachers of leadership and in
fluence. In thc community as well as In
the sehools, that the College will chiefly
aim, through these scholarships. Hence,
no young man under nineteen years of I
age will be eligible, und preference will
be given to those applicants who have
already tuught with success for at
least one year.
A special and technical course of
study hus been established, on a high
yet practical plane; and it is intended
that this department shall bc worthily
.?Jirltle.l to he called a "College for
Teat hers." All the work will be dis
tinctively normal, and apart from the
.cgular College, classes. The Trustees
and Faculty feel sure that in preparing
a body of strong and well equipped
men teachers the College will aid in
?mpplylng one of thc most Important
needs of the State. They hope, also,
that this work, In Its ?UCCCBS und Its
results, may mei t with Buch public ap
proval ns to lead "hereafter to ins still
further enlargement.
Circulars have been issued giving the
detalle of regulations and course of
study.
