' - . ; Thc surviving brother ot Mr. Gon zales, Who bogan this paper twelve years ago, have had will power enough to suppress the two thousand.articles willen havo conic into their oliicc. Within less than one hundred yards from where N. G. Gonzales had worked .lor ten years ho was shot down by Till man and there was no attempt of violence against him. Ho has spent ? live months1 in jail without any Gover nor's Guards or any protection what ever. ' Tillman goes around now w.th as much protection and safety as any per son in South Carolina. Because tho Stale forsooth publishes articles about liars, thieves and crimi nals, as does any other reputable pa per, thc defence thinks' that it is dom1 to prejudice Hie people of .Richland County against .Jamel H. Tillman'. "Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind. Tlie thief doth .fear each bush an . otllcer." Because thc State has declined just tribute to Mr. George R. ltcmbert and Col. P. H. Nelson I sec no reason why the allidavit of Mr. Rembort should have any force. Gen Bellinger, in conclusion, stated briclly thc reason why thc change should not bc granted. He made a powerful argument arid was eagerly beard by thc hundreds of people in thc Court room. "MU. TllUHMOND'S AUOUJIUNT. Solicitor.!. W.Thurmond followed for the State and began Iiis argument by bringing to Hie attention pf the Court what was necessary for the granting of a chance of venue. Why do they ask for ibis change? K?rst. Because there arc only 1.S0?. white jurors out of 1,000 voters. This certainly should not be sullicicilt grounds for t hc change. Because Mr. W. II. Hilmes liad made a statement that he was opposed lo Tillman, and because he is county auditor the change should be granted. Mr. Thurmond showed that the Sulli van case, which had been referred to, Wits not at all similar. Thc next point refuted was that because a few citizens liad subscribed to a monument fund. This should not wrap public opinion in sucha man ner as to prevent thc defendant from Obtaining a fair and impart ial t rial. Several cases were referred lo in which it hud been decided that news paper editorials should not hesulliricnt grounds for a change of venue. lt is well established that when the prejudice is con lined to ono locality a chango of venue cannot bc granted. Solicitor Thurmond spoke fur forty minutes and made a forcible argument, bringing out, many points of law which hail not been touched upon by his associates. At thc conclusion of Solicitor Thu la mond's argument ISx-Judge O. W. Buchanan, who is connccUl witli thc counsel for the defence, arose and ad dressed the Court; A TI U A l>K AO A INST Till". THE CHANUK QUANTED. When Mr. Croft closed, .lodge Townsend remarked that lie had kept up with the. affidavits for three days and had never .listened to such able arguments, aud lie was convinced that thochanguof venue should lie grant ed, lie entered upon no statement o? lils reasons and, merely making the brief announcement, said he was ready hear suggestions as to the county in which to try it. THE ''?lM?UDY TRIAL"' CLAIM. Mr. Nelson said Tillman was anx ious for a speedy trial and only "two counties were now available-ridge field and Saluda. Mr. Thurmond spoke of the incon veniences of Saluda, and suggested either Kershaw ur Lexington. As to a speedy trial lie said LSrtgetield Court would be held Hie lirst Monday in August: Saluda the third, Camdeu the llrst Monday In September and Lexington the third. Mr. Crawford expressed serious objections to Saluda because it was practically the hume of the defendant, being tlie county of whiQh George I). Tillman was the father, and thc State would not have an equal show of fair ness there with bbc defendant. Col Croft ridiculed tho idea that George D. Tillman's work in behalf of Saluda would afb ct the judgment of the people, lie made light of tho iifleen miles of nicky road thc wit j nesscs would have to travel to get. to I the Court House from the nearest railroad station, and mentioned four ortho "hotels and boarding houses1' people could stop at. LET T1I1C STATU HAVE A CHANCE. Mr. Bellinger declared that it would bc wrong to take thc case to Saluda, because it would bc taking ic to a county where the State would be at a great disadvantage, lie declared that the defence could not pretend that tiley wauled a speedy trial, because they bad a chance during the last Court, when the State agreed to ac cept any affidavits absent witnesses might make. '?he Hamberg Herald Saya the cata logue of the Carlisle Fitting School lias just been issued. We deal re to note some .of tile moro important facts as given here. Prof. ll. G. Sheridan, for the past two years Head Master, of the institution, lias been retained. Tile Hoard acted wisely. Pror! Sheridan is not only a success ful teacher and disciplinarian but also a repr?sentative o? the parents whose sims and daughters are his students, lin joy lng the esteem and close friend ship of every student, he makes a great contribution not only to tiie in tellectual but also to the moral man hood of the students. In ids depart ment of mathematics and science, he will still be assisted by Mis? Pct Stephens, who lias been associated with Prof. Sheridan since his connec tion witli the school. Wc do not hesi tate to say that no happier selection could have been made. Tho selection of Miss Stephens has the endorsement of the whole body of st udents as well as that of thc community abroad; She tills her place lu the girls' hoard ing department and in the school room witli entire satisfaction. In the departments of'English and his tory, and of Latin and Greek, wc ob serve that Prof. W. (J. Owen and Prof. .1. Clifton Kcdmon have been elected. These young men are gradtmt.es of Welford College. No higher tribute could he paid than that paid by Dr. .las. ll. Carlisle and President ll. N. Snyder, ol Welford College. They are well equipped by training and ex perience, having taken ut Woifoid College the not mal course for teachers. They bring with them ability, young life and enthusiasm which will atl.l thought to the faculty. In thc tic part ment of music Miss .lennie Waif Foster, a grad?ate of Columbia Female College anti a student of music in the Chicago school, has been elect ed. She comes most bighlv educated and endorsed. Mrs. Josephine 1 leach, the pouplar and clllcient matron of the girls' boarding department, bas been retain ed in her position. She is tpiite an addition to the school, and the Insti tution is quite fortunate to have lier services. The Carlisle Pitting School oilers three courses in ber curricu lum: A preparative for thc Fresh man class; a preparative for the So photuoie class, and a preparative for a successful entering on business life. This last course is prepared for those younu mon and women who cannot alford a college course. Wc have bert! in our mitist the op portunity offered to our young people for a thorough education ata most reasonable cost. We understand that a student in all departments can spend a year herc ;it. the low cost of $107. paying for board, tuition and all leos. To t hc young people of our town, tills education is offered for thu sum of $:{."). When we consider the advan tages offered; a line library, two line debating societies, the association in the class-room with teachers, and with young men and young women from all parts of middle and lower Sout h Car olina, we esteem it an opportunity enjoyed by hut few communities. We are glad that there is a bright out look for the next session. Now, let thc people of Baili berg give this in stitution lier patronage, then will the school occupy a warmer place in their hearts. The school deserves it, there fore it claims it. What sort of ad ministration is that?" Senator Platt, no doubt, thinks a poor excuse is bet ter than none, but his efforts to make tile renegade Democrats who voted for McKinley for the sake of otlice the scapegoats for Republican raeall - ty won't do. In thc first place Machen and his ilk ceased to be Democrats when they voted for McKinley, and it is hardly the fair thing to class them as Democrats when they are de tected helping the Republicans loot tile United States treasury. We are not at all surprised af the outcome of Machen rascality.
