"The excursion from Hamlet to

About 40() persons went over. A

the crowd coming largely from
the small stations between herc

Only two casualties are reported
Two young men fought over the

Thc Uso ol' Lemons.
Lemons are of untold good as
health pr Carvers. Tbe way to get
the better of a ?>iit?tl5-System with
out blue pills or quinine is to take
the juice of two or three lemons in
just enough water to make it pleas
ant to drink without sugar, before
going to lied. Ju tbe morning be
fore breakfast repeat thc dose.
Lemon juice is the best anti-seor
butic remedy known ; it not only
cures thc disease, but prevents it.
A physician suggests rubbing of the
gums daily with lemon juice to keep
them in health. The bands and
nails arc also kept clean and in good
condition by daily usc of lemon in
stead of soap. 11 also prevents chil
blains. Lemon used intermittent
fever is mixed with strong, hot black
tea or coffee, without sugar. Neu
ralgia may bc cured by rubbing the
part ailee ted with lemon. In fact,
its usc arc manifold, and thc more
we apply il externally, thc better

THIEVES PETTY AND STUPID
ttodern Invention Un? Dr Hon OBI
tua Crnftr Kind.
"Tho people who nowadays givo thc
detectives must trouble ure tho meui
hers of that vnBt horde of petty thieves,
hoth white und black, that infest every
great city," said one of the most o in
dent detectives of the Washington de
partment. "Tho days of mummoth bur
glaries, diamond robberies und bril
liant thieving op?rations have paused,
perhaps never to return, nud Instead
of tho really shrewd, calculating and
bold thiof of hulf a century ago we
bavo today a mob of petty pilferers,
who ato far from possessing one-tenth
part of tho brains and wit of the old
time thief, but manage nevertheless to
give tho police a vost deal of trouble.
'Tho progress of Invention hus put
tlie shrewd thief and burglar out of
business. Say, for example, a man
steals several thousand dollars. Very
well. Thu moment he does so he real
izes that lu order to retain his ill gotten
gains he must leave the scene of tho
crime, realizing that he ls In nowlso
prepared to cope with modern detec
tive and police methods. Probably be
fore he leaves the city telegrams and
telephone messages have preceded him
to the cities ol' the United States and
Canada, and he is nabbed thc moment
he reaches lils destination. But sup
posing that hu escape; ali these traps
and reaches some loreign country
why, he ls simply lu us bad a plight
there as he was before leaving home.
Nowadays there ls hardly a govern
ment or country with which the United
States has not entered into an under
standing whereby criminals are caught
and returned, and what fow and far
distant states with which our govern
ment has failed to draw up any such
arrangement can he very easily man
ngud in case Uncle Sam wants to get
any of his missing children back.
"The result is that no really bright
or shrewd person would think of un
dertaking a job of burglary or stealing
in this age. None hut the desperately
poor, (lie degenerates, morphine users,
tlie submerged tenth, so to speak, now
adays practice stealing.- They aro too
stupid to reali/.u the danger of such a
course and plunge headlong Into a ca
reer that must sooner or later land
them behind the bars."-Washington
