Forty thousand birds, mostly sandpipers, are reported to have been killed recently on the North Carolina coast for millinery. Tho Egyptian government has j written to the United States de partment of Agriculture to secure j the services of a cotton expert and chemist. Senator Pritchard of N. C., has1 been made a member of the su preme court o? the District of Col umbia-which pays a salary of $6,000. The New York and New Orleans Cotton Exchange will make an effort to close up the town ex change. This is a merger of specu lation. The breaks on the levees on the Mississippi have resulted in great loss of life and property and thous ands ot-acres of the richest cotton lauds aro under water. Thc South Carolina College has| issued an attractive circular, an nouncing a spring term for teach ers, of six weeks, from April 13 to May 22, designed for teachers whose school terms may admit of attendance. Tho Baptists of North Carolina have arranged to hold a great mid summer meeting at Jackson Springs beginning June 21st, and continuing 10 days. Editor Bai ley of thc Biblical Recorder says there will bc fully 50 speakers, among these Kev, Pw. T. Bryan, now on his way home from China, and Kev. Dr. A. T. Robertson of Louisville, An Animal College. Thc above interesting, educational in stitution, is conducted permanently in the eily where Gentry l?ros., the famous animal trainer, make their home. A large building build of red brick and modeled io a most up-to-date manner is devoted ozolusively (o tho education o?* and im proving intelligently the vast number of animals u?cd in the performances of their famous shows. A systematic course of tuition is given each scholar and wheo their education has been completed, en titling them to perform-some act they arc immediately given a place in thc pro ?raul?np of the show. This institution is maintained at no little expense, and thc animals which are seen in tho perform ances given in thc Gentry Bros. United Shows may bc easily termed '"College Bred Animals." A long list of new as pirants for fame in the arena have been added tbis season, and Gentry Bros, famous Shows arc said to be exactly twice their former size; Tho exhibition day for hcnnettsville is Friday April 10. The trustees and patrons of Ked Bluff Academy vrero invited by the Srincipal of said school, Miss Blanche tackhouse, to be present on the after noon of Friday 27 th of Mar oh to hear the declamation and recitations of the pupils. The visitors were not many in number but those who were present were well repaid for going. We noted especially in the larger boys, im provement sinco we . were present sotnethiog like two months ago.. It would be helpful to the entire school, teachers and acholara alike, if thejpatrons generally would come out on such occasions. The parents would enjoy the hour and profit as well. I therefore urge them to attend when, ever they have the opportunity. At the conclusion we were treated to a pleasant surprise in the form of a mock trial of a "chinaman" for some alleged offence. Percy Stanton was Judge, Charlton McLaurin prosecuting attorney, Har I ris Parker attorney for the prisoner, a number of little bovsthe jury. Boyd Willis, Joe McDonald and Miss Lulu Jen igan witnesses. - The "Chinaman" or prisoner was Willie Jora igan. The piece was hum? emus, the parts were well carried out and thoroughly enjoyed. I think it would be well for the other schools of tho county to copy Miss Stackhouse in this departure of hers, frequent entertainments on Friday afternoons for parents. The people would feel a deeper interest in the . schools and would be brought into touch and sym pathy with the teachers which would ne mutually beneficial. The picnic season is close at hand and we invite them all to come to Red Bluff. We can offer inducements such as good water, fishing, boating, shade, a place to rest, a warm welcome and a high and dry spot of woods in which to roam. Let U9 know in time and we believe Messrs E.
