Crop Prospects Gloomy.
Mr. John H. Mitchel, who has
been into several counties in North
Carolina since the heavy rains, says
that in many place? tho formers are
giving up their farms and say they
prefer surrendering now to the
merchant H trom whom they purchas
ed their fertilizers and supplies. As
it is not too late the cotton may be
plowed up and planted in corn to
feed the stock and make bread.
A Narrow Escape.
On Saturday evening labijust

Messenger Milton MeLaurin was
accidentally shot in the following
manner. In trying to place his pis
tol in his hip pocket it fell on the
floor of the car and exploded ono
hall, which lodged in his leg below
the knee, inflicting an ugly and
painful wound. Ho received prompt
medical attention and remained in
Fayetteville until Tuesday evoning
when ho was brought homo, and at
last accounts was getting along very
nicely !
