I dreamed ? strange dream. I dream

little town there was three churches-*
a Baptist, A Method itt and a Presby

good preachers. I thought that there
was preaching service at ono or the
other of thora en oh Gabba th; Sunday
School every Bundey; revival meeting
at all eoaaouB of tho year--sprint; sum
mer aud winter. I mourned that there
wore people both men and women
living in that little town who have
not heard tho gospel preached in twou
ty years ? dreamed lust night there
was a protracted meeting going on in
that little town. I dreamed the mer?
oban ta closed thoir atores: but, in my
dreams, ? could not BOC tho clerks or
merchants at preaohiug. I thought
that in that little town there were
young men just starting in life who
wore not there; and tho spirit of my
dreams said unto me mortal: "Do you
know why it ia that BO many of tho
people in the town you are dreaming
about wait until the preacher hue
given out his hymus and text to come
blundering in when the moBt of them
live within a stone's throw of tbe
churches. If thore ia au entertainment
of any kind they are always the tirrt
there, wanting reaorve seato; why is it
mortal, that they can't get to church
in time?" The only answer I could
make waa thu: ' "Of all tho amazing
things in this world the amazitiest is
that some pooplo wait so long to go to
preaehiug. I hope that I was not
dreaming ot' any of our Marlboro towns!
lt this is thc caso, let ua quit going to

Tho leotnre of Rev. C. H. Smith

Little did I think when 1 finished my
letter yesterday that I would have to res
port the death of one of our oldest citi
zens. Mr. W Godfrey Stanton died very
suddenly of heart disease. Just a short
half hour before I was talking with him.
While sitting in the church the news
came to me that he was dead. How
uncertain is life, how certain death. Mr.
Stanton will be missed In our town per
haps as no one else would, because he
was active, energetic, full of lite. Being
engaged in the Hotel business I venture
the assertion that he was more widely
known than any man in our county. He
had lots ol friends among the traveling
men who. come to our town, a large re
lationship and scores ot friends among
us here. Mr. Stanton had his failings -
he was only human. Has there ever
been but one perfect man on earth ? His
short comings only hurt himself, He
was an honest man ; would put himself
to trouble to pay even a cent he owed ;
accommodating as a? neighbor; kind and
generous to tue poor when opportunity
offered itself. We will miss him from
among us, but we will t?'ii?t that lie is at
rest. Mr, Stanton waa 72 years of age
last June, and very active and energetic
for* his years ; served his country in the
Confederate army, was wounded while
in Virginia. Alter the war he, took up
the burden o? life as a farmer. As he
(elt the hand of time laying heavy upon
him he sold his farm, moved into town
and has since been engaged in tbe Hotel
business. He leaves a widow and nine
children to mourn his departure. A
good, honest- friend ol mine is dead I
what more can t say ?
