NUKI)KU IN FF,F, DEE.
We see it stated in the pupers that
tpe California Fish Commission havo
prooured a largo number of blaok bass
and turned thora looso in tho German
carp infested rivers in tho hone that
they will destroy tho carp. If they
succeed wo think our Fish Commission
should get a lot and turn them loose
in Pee Deo if they would preserve tho
shad and red horse, which aro fast bo
coming depopulated in this river, once
noted for its supply of both, especially
tho rodhoreo, so much relished by our
peoplo. Tho carp will never becoino
as popular as tho shad or red horse and
tho soonor we get rid of them tho
bjttor.
THE BENEF?T OF GOOD ROADS.
Through tho kindness of Hon. C. S.
McCall wc have received a copy of tho |
Houston, Texas, Post with a full ro
port of tho "Good Roads Convenli?n" I
of thut Stato, held at Galveston on tho
10th and 11th. From tho discussion
reported aud the various letters rend,
wo fake it that Texas is now wide
awake on the subject of good roads
Two years ago tho fever for good roads
in South Carolina warmed up to a
call for a State convention and there
it onded. While all admit the benefit
to be derived io thc wear and tear of
vehicles and saving of horso flesh
thero is no concert of action and tho ]
whole matter is thrown upon theshoul
dors of tho county Supervisors who arc ]
oxpected, without oven a fair co-opo
ration on tho part ol tho laud owners j
to aid them, to keep up tho roads.
Th?8 is all wrong and a remedy has
been s-uggestcd by ono of our public
spirited men and an enthusiast on this
burning question of importance to the
people of Marlboro. It is this, that a
county convention of dolcgatcs from
ench township desiring better roads to
moot at Bennottsville and organize for
cooperation with tho supervisor in
putting every road in tho couuty in
good condition. Tho suggestion com
mends itself, and with such an organ
jzation complaints against the plowing
in the roads or placing obstiuclions
would cea&e. Tho supervisor would
feel he had power, willi the co-opera
tion of the people to back him, to go
to work and giyo us hotter raads every
where. It cannot bo done without
public co-operation. Talk it up and
issuo tho call at once.
Wo shall havo moro to say next
week.

The subject of this brief skolch-"M.

proved of incalculable benefit to us,
of which otherwise, wo cou'd never

lessons was that of sobriety. Ho cou?

success in any department of life that
polluted his lips with tho accursed

at tho shrine of Bacchus. To this wc
aro prepared to say amen 1
Truthfulness was one ot his bright,
shining characteristics. No ono ever

often heard him give expression to
these words: "Toll tho truth let the

As a reformer, he was ono of tho
