Luncheon Floral D?corations.-Yel low daffodils were much used at the luncheon parties given along thc Thames during thc late boat race. At one house the luncheon table hud a narrow white satin cloth laid down the centre, work ed with yellow silk in tho Russian cross stitch, with a border of Greek lace, re lieved by a lining of yellow satin. Low white china receptacles filled with daffi dils were scattered about, while in the centre stood a gilded basket filled with the same, its tall handle wreathed with broad white and yellow ribbon, finished off on one side in a large bow. Tho operation should bo performed in the morning before breakfast. A soft red rubber tubo ls passed gently down into tho stomach quito to tho pylorus; with this is connected about a yard of com mon ilexlblo tubing nud a glass funnel, which is bold on tho lovel with tho patient's breast, and tepid water is poured slowly into tho funnel until a sensation of fulness is experienced; tho funnel is then depressed to tho level of tho waist, and tho fluid allowed to syphon out. Tho process is repeated until tho water returns quite olear. The washing should be repeated every day for a week or ten days, and during that time the dlot should bo restricted to milk or u httlo meat; then the wash ing may be dono every second or third day, and Mnnlly abandoned at tho end of three weeks. A jPrench physician, Dr. Layet, has just published tho results of bis inqui ries into tho nature of a singular mal ady known as "vanillism," which : science bas, it scorns, lately added to tho sufficiently long catalog vie of human disorders. Bordeaux is tho chief cm- i porluni of vanilla, some 70,000 pounds i of that spico being annually imported. Tho men employed in cleaning and < sorting it have long been known to su flor from a very peculiar affection of which Dr. Haye t's investigations have now revealed tho cause. Its symptoms are redness and itching of tho skin, often attended with desquamation of tho cuticle, and usually accompanied with general malaise, lassitude and giddiness. All the trouble is caused by a minuto acarus which lives in tho vanilla, and finds its way to tho person handling it. Dr. Eayot's labors have not as yet been crowned with tho discovery or any cure for tho new diseaso. A correspondent writes to tho Scien tific American in regard to taking care of the hair: "Experience bus taught me that it is best to keep all oils or '? grease from tho hair. This course luis started a now growth of hair with me, , not very thick, but bettor than none at all." It is reported that a Dr. Eisenmunn, oC Berlin, has invented a piano which by tho aid of electro-magnetism can sustain, increase and diminish sound. This bas been attempted by other ex perts, notably Boehm, the inventor of the metal ilute. Another novelty will be that by moving tho electro-magnets the timbre of the tone is changed; for example, from that of a violincello to a piccolo. If true, wo shall probably hear more about this novelty anon. The globules or small divisions of tho milk glands consist of vesicles which contain tho globules of fat thai aro found in tho milk and collular substaneo, among which tho capillary or exceedingly Ano blood vessols ramify very closely. As theso vosicles break down and decom pose to form tho milk, carrying with them tho fat globules, and are quickly replaced by now structure, it is readily perceived that it is very easy for tho capillary vessels, which contribute through tho blood both tho albuminous matter and tho fat globules to form theso vesicles, to discharge blood under unfavorable circumstances by which any injury may bo done or any excite ment of tho circulation or inflam matory or congestive condition may bo produced. Many causes may thus contribute to this defect in tho milk, audit isdifflcult to state, or evon guess, what tho causes may bo. Tho remedy is to sootho and allay tho excited circulation by cooling, laxative medicine, and emollient and cooling application to tho udder. A pound of Epsom salts ls generally use ful, and warm fomentation of tho udder, witli a following application of somo gentle stimulant, as camphorated soap liniment. ? LO wi NO SOD.-It is a question rarely decided among farmers at what time it is best to plow sod for a corn crop. This question is best settled by considering what Is expected of this operation. Tho great point ls that tho corn crop sind) proeuro a largo portion of ita nutriment from it; another isthat tho corn may bo planted on fresh clean ground so that it may get ahead of tho weeds by rapid and vigorous germina tion. How, then, can theso important point? be best secured? Clearly by per mitting the herbage to grow as long as possible, and by deferring tho plowing until tho last moment. Then a largo quantity of the most acceptable food for the young corn is plowed under; the Boil is mellow, moist and fresh; planting is done under tho host conditions. Tho seeds of weeds will sprout quickly and n light harrowing beforo tho corn is up will destroy tho germs and clean the ?round of myriads pf thoiri, lightening tho after-labor ot cultivating tho orup. A top-dressing of manure on tho sod before thc plowing will bo a great as sistance. TALL AND DWARF PISAS.-There ire thoso with round and thoso with wrinkled seeds. Tho round seeded aro the earliest and hardiest. A popular variety is Daniel O'Rourke, known also is Early Kentish, and by as many other names as there uro seedsmen, each one of whom has bis Earliest of All,most of which are essentially the same. Of tho wrinkled kinds Champion of England is tho best known, tho standard with which all others will bc compared. The Telephone is very largo and line. Lax loirs Alpha is thu earliest of wrinkled peas, and very satisfactory for minor crops. All ol' theso need sticks or some kind of trellis for support, as they grow three feet and moro in height. In view of tho trouble of procuring brush and slaking tho taller kinds, dwarf kinds are very pppular. Tho vines aro from 10 to 18 inches high and require no staking. Tho best of these is tho American Wonder, and there arc num bers of others. Some of theso yield their whole crop nt ono picking, and tho ground may then bo cleared o?! for u small garden. Bou?a*BBUOUjartt, Too MUCH.-Rustics may bo ex cused for not being well informed about thc value, of pictures, but their notions are sometimes very amusing, neverthe less. It is related of Thomas Duncan, a highly successful Scotch artist, tbat he was oiico ut work-out ol' doors in the west of England-upon a beautiful landscape in water-color, when an old fellow came up und looked over .his shoulder. "Humph!" said the stranger. "Now how much do you-want for that little one l.Vlug on tho ground?" "AVell," replied Duncan, wishing to seo what thc mun would say, "times uro bani, and I couldn't take less than live shillings for thal." "And thc bigger one by its side?" pursued tile customer. "That," responded Duncan, "would be wodli len shillings." "And the larger one still, that you aro painting now?" "This," replied thc painter, "is worth ut least a guinea." "Guinea!" ejaculated tho old man, as ho stood transfixed; "guinea! A guinea for thc Uko of that 1" and be walked away, leaving Duncan to enjoy his joke ns he went on finishing the picture which bc expect (Kl to sell without diffi culty for three hundred pounds. MiSTiiKSS-"Mercy on me, wbat a kitchen! livery pot, pan and dish is dirty, thc table looks like a junk shop, and-why, it will take you a week to get things cleaned upi What havo you neon doing?" "Sure, rhum, the young leddies has jtist been down hore, showing me how they roast a potato at the cooking schcol." TUB devil bolds poor cards, but ho plays them mighty well. W, L, DOUGLAS.
