Since the publication of the May number, the demand
for the Ladies' Companion, has been unprecedented
and beyond the most sanguine anticipations.
At tho commencement of the volume an adililional
number of copies were printed, which was
considered at the time adequate to satisfy all the'
orders which .ight be received, and leave a considerable
ii<itube, on hatld lor subsequent calls. The
publisher is more than graiitiel in stating thai the
whole edi'ion was nearly exhausted before the issuing
of the seventh number of the volume; and at

land, to supply the numerous orders which arc
laily received froin every section of the U. S.
In coiiseq-ienee of this great unforseen mcrense of

ITS LITERARY CHARACTER!
Will undergo considerable change, as the publisher
of the Lacies' Companion, in order to show his
appreciation ofthc public favor already extended to

possessing greater variety of talent, or better calculated
to aul in conducting a ladies magazine, could
have been selected from the galaxy of female genius

the powetful talents of M'rs. Stephens, the proprietor
has secured a list of contributors, which combined

Gin. no other knd having been in ute prevout
to tins pateut; and whether tingle or double, they
are found to improve the quality of the coltoo, by
more perfectly cleaning it. They can be made to
contain from SlOlo lbUsawsin a stand, and whether
tinall or large, one hand will be sufficient to attend
tlicin. The Gins have uieclianical feeders and
hoppers attached to tliein, which free the cotton
train leaves, trash, dirt, &c. before it can reach the
saws, and b> the thorough hackling operation it
receives iroui ine iceoers, wuich uia&w iwo revolutions
to one of the saws, it is almost in * half
gioed state, before it descends to the saw. By a
very simple arrangement of a screw to each set ol
gaates, on which the hoppers rest, and through
which the teeth oi the feeders pass, they can he
made to teed slow or last to suit the condition of
the cotton at the time. When made double, the
saws are placed on two sets ol cylinders and turn
upon each other in opposite direct oris, and are
cleansed by two sets ot brushes that have four revolutions
to one of twe saw. The two cylinders can
be detached so as to enable the planter to run one
or both ut pleasure, although embraced with ieeders,
i&c. id one stand. The whole is put in operation
with n drum and band, as in the ordinary Gin, and
may be propelled by horse, steam, or water power.
It may also be propelled by iron running gear.
The iorce required to work it, is about the same as <
that necessary to move tin iqual number oi saws in
the common Gin. This Gut lias been put in
operation in Mew Orleans for twft or three weekB,
and its success tested in the presence of u large
number of planters, merchants and others, and
received their general approbation
Several gentlemen have been so kind as to give
the Patentee their written opinion lespecting the
merits of the Gin. A number of others could be
added, but the following are deemed sufficient:
From his Excellency Gov. While of Louisiana.
New Orleans, Feb. Ji7, ltt37.
Dr. A.Jones?Sir, In reply to your enquiry,1
what 1 think of your improved Cotton Gin, 1 have
to say, that 1 saw it work on Saturday ihef&lli inst.
and was very much pleased with its performance.
The mere fact of its self-feeding, seems to me to
be a very valuable improvement; and besides, the
quality of the cotton, us it conies out of the pro- {
cess, appeared to ine to be belter and cleaner than
from the common Gins in use, and that it saves
considerably in labor. Respectfully, &c.
