day by a huge omelet, which
blocked the tracks.
Tha omelet was caused by fire.
Several hundred thousand eggs
had t eeu stored in a refrigera
ting plant ou the main liue. The
building caught lire and early in
the b'aE0 the floors ga?re way,
dropping all the eggs to the
ground floor aud breaking ail of
them.
The intense heat caused them
to swell, aud as the omelet grew
it pushed its way upon the tracks.
For a full hundred feet on both
sides of the burning structure
this gigantic omelet tilled the
right of way. ? s
At first it might have been
possible to push a locomotive
through the mass, since the om
elet was very light aud frothy.
But by the time the tire was ex
tinguished the omelet had become
sad aud, dropped into a heavy,
solid mass, which was as lough
as a rarebit.
A wrecuing crew was sent for,
chaius were attached to one
end of t|io mass aud a locotno
live got into action. The omelet
was rolled up aud shoved to the
side of the trucks.

He it ordained by the Mayor and
Aldermen of the City of Camden, S.
C.( siid by the authority ot the same,
that the following taxes he aud the
same are hereby levied for the eiirreiit
year from the 1st day of Jauuaay 1000,
tu the 81st day of December, 180U.
A tax of ten (10) mills on eneh and
uvery dollar of real and personal prop
erty within Use corporate limits ol the
City of Camden, 8. C., on the first day
of January 1S(K).
Sec. 1. That all able bodied male
person* between the ages ?f eighteen
aud fifty years, residing within the
corporate limits of the city of Can.den,
8. C., not exempted from road duty
under the law of the State, shall work
the streets, ways and bridges under
the direction of such overseers as may
be appointed for such a space of time
not exceeding six ((() days in one year.
Provided: That at the time of re
ceiving the notice any person may pay
to the person giving such notice three
dollars (#:t.00) commutation, which
shall be received in lieu of the work,
and that any person refusing to work
caid streets or to nay said imuimutu
lion, shall be lined not less than five
lf3.00) dollars nor more than ten
($10.00) dollars or be imprisoned not
leg* than ten (10) days nor more than
twenty (20) days, in the discretion of
the city Recorder.
