and woman, who poured carbolic
acid down her throat and tied her

A rather severe tornado passed
over parts of Texas Wednesday and
over parts of South Carolina Thurs
day morning, killing several persons
and doing much damage to property.
Two negroes in Asheville, N. C.,
fought a duel with razors last Tues
day and both came out cut within an
inch of their lives.
The Montgomery Advertiser fig
ures it up that President Toft, with
in the last nine years, has traveled

who ever arrived at the White House.
Captain Mueller and his five com
panions in tho balloon America were
found safe near Pasadena, after
landing in the mountains. It was
thought that they had floated out on
the ocean.
A 20-year-old widow, who re
married, has been awarded the estate
of her first husbnnd, amounting to
$20,000, in Brooklyn, in a suit
brought against her by his relatives.
Five (months after the husband's
death a child was bom. and, although
the plaintiff's contend that it was
d?nd at birth, the young woman
proved by the testimony of a nurse
that the baby lived a minute and
therefore she was entitled to the full
estate.
Joe and Isham Taylor and Lewis
Jenkins were found guilty of first
decree murder in the Skipwith mur
der and arson case at Powhatan. Va.,
and John Brown, guilty of murder in
the second decree. All are negroes.
Brown got. 15 years in the peniten
tiary and tho others will die in the
electric chair.
The .Supreme Court of Appeals of
Virginia decided that voters may pay
their poll tax, which is essential to
qualification, in person, by messen
ger, by check or by postal order.
The National Association of
Liquor Dealers will test in the Unit
ed States Suprome Court, the pro
vision of the Byrd law, of Virginia,
which requires a license of $f>00 for
salesmen selling liquors by sample.
Willie Whitla identified the Cleve
land suspects as his kidnappers, and
his father said he knew John Boyle,
the man, but refused to talk of the

President Taft's White Steamer

When the announcement was made
several months ago that ' Mr. Taft
would use an automobile, instead of
carriages, during his term as Presi
dent, much rivalry developed among
the leading manufacturers for the
honor of selling him a car. and the
public watched with interest, to sec
what Mr. Taft's choice would be. The
knowing ones predicted that the White
Steamer would be selected, and they
pointed out that President Roosevelt
had used White Steamers for two
years at his summer home at Oyster
Bav, and had recommended this make
to Mr. Taft as the most desirable.
This prediction proved correct, al
though Mr. Taft did not rely solely
on Mr. Roosevelt's recommendation,
but with his usual thoroughness, de
termined to have an investigation
made of all the principal makes. Ac
cordingly, he asked several officers of
the War Department to look into the
matter for him, and they tested many
makes of cars, visited a number of
factories, so that they might see what
materials were used, and, Anally, (hey

ent types of cars in public contests
and In privnto service.
When their labors were completed.
the officials reported unanimously to
Mr. Taft In favor of the White, and*
accordingly a car of this make was
fmmediately ordered from the manu
facturers, The White Company, of
Cleveland.
The new car was delivered to Mr.
Taft in Washington a few days be
fore his Inauguration, and since that
time It has been in almost constant
use. There has not been a day when
the President or some members of his
family have not been seen riding
around the National Capital In the
new car. It Is hinted that Mr. Taft
likes fast traveling, and that when he
rides out into the open country, he
does not always Insist that the speed
of the car bo kept within the legal
limits.
E. W. Cans, manager of the
southern branch of the White Com
pany, 126 Marietta street, Atlanta,
Ga., said recently to a corre
spondent f ' this paper: "We ve re
ceiving many Inquiries each day ask
ing for full details regarding the con
struction cf Mr. Taft'a car, and in re
ply we are sending copies of our cat
j alog. Mr. Taft's car is exactly like
any other Model 'M* 40 horse-power
| White Steamer except that his car
has the United States coat-of-arms
painted .on either door. In other
words, when we make a car for the
President of the United States' there
Is no way in which we can make it
any better than the car which yon,
or anybody else, can purchase from
us."
"Some of those writing to me about
Mr. Taft's car say that, although they
are very destroys of having a car llko
Mr. Taft's, they are afraid that such
a car is somewhat larger and more
expensive than they desire. In reply
to these letters I point out that our
Model 'O* 20 horse-power car is ex
actly like our 40 horse-power model,
except as regards the size of the dif
ferent parts. The principle of con
struction Is exactly the same and the
smaller car possesses all the desirable
qualities of our larger model. In
other words, I point out that they can
secure an exact duplicate of Mr. Taft's
car for $4000, or a car of the same
qualities, but of smaller dimensions,
for only $2000. Judging by the de
mand for White cars, a good propor
tion of those desiring to purchase au
tomobiles are quite content to trust
President Taft's judgment as to the
I best and most dcsirablo make."
