Milwaukee, March 26.?The
-first of a series of re ui ark able de
bales was held tonight ou the
?question, "Resolved, That pro
hibition, as applied to ihe manu
facture uud sale o( intoxicating
ibeverages is right." Mayor
David S. Hose of Milwaukee
ilook the negative, and Dr. Sam'I.
Dicicie, president of Albion col
.lege, Albion, Mich., spoke for
the prohibitionists. The hippo
drome, with ii seating capacity
of 6,000, was jammed to Hie
doors, aud throngs were lurued
-*way.
There was no decisiou ren
,-dered on the debate.
Dr. Dickie said in part:
"The prohibition of the liquor
trattic is right if considered only
Iroiu the economic standpoint.
The saloon is the foe of capital,
but preeminently the enemy of
.iabor.
The liquor business breeds
^criminals. The testimony of
prison chaplains, of Wardens,
sheriffs aud judges of the crimi
nal courts warrants the asset*
lion that from 80 to 90 per cent
.of crime is directly traceable to
ihe use of intoxicating liquors."
In arguing that prohibition is
wrong, Mayor Kose treated the
subject from three standpoints,
ihe Biblical, the ethical aud the
Anateual. He showed that while
the evil existed when the Ten
Commandments were written,
juo attempt was made to enforce
jpfohibiiion in the decalogue aud
lie challenged any one to find one
word in the Bible advocating
ihe theories of prohibitionists.
He toolc the census figures of
"the government and records of
?cities aud States to prove that
jprohibitioo did not decrease
jsrime, insanity, death, domes
tic infelicity, pauperism and

worn is to begin at once and
under the contract th?y will

next to complete it, although
they promise to complete it by

The bridge will be a free one,
and wilt take the place of the
toll bridge which was washed
away In. the floods of last Au
gust. West Wateree is an im
portant feeder to Camden, and
the building of a free bridge
means much to that community,
as well as to Richland -county.
