food there, and they all sat down and
?ft the door between
the two apartments a little ajar, that
he might hear the sound of moving
it she was to awaken. Not to dis
turb her rest they moved quietly aud
spoke in low voiccs.
The Cure sat opposite to Arthur.
He had a gentle, pleasant face, wlt!^
the kindly exp*easiou of interest in
all the world, worn so cftsn by those
who havo known no great cares, and
havo traversed no heights or depths
of weal or woo.
?' Arthur felt very grateful to thera
for coming back to him; it took away
the feeling of forlorn loneliness
which had been creeping upon him,
making him dread he scarcely knew
what.
"I fear, I greatly fear, In spite of
our conviction of his Innocence, that
old Battl6te will be condemned," said
Monsieur Tasset, mournfully. "I
cannot see who else can have been
guilty, although I feel morally sure
that ho i3 not; but everything is
against him. It seem3 ho has, with
out the smallest scruple, said that
he possessed a duplicate key of liia
master's room."
"A duplicate key!" exclaimed the
Cure. "Then why did he suffer the
doors to be broken down?"
"Ho does not know what has be
come of it. He will not, or cannot,
say why or when it was lost, lie is
half in his dotage."
"But that he should have men
tioned that duplicate key doe3 not
seem like Ruilt, and must be In his
favor," said the Cure, quickly.
"So It is old Battlsto whom they
accuse?" said a voice, very gently
and slowly, whose tones mada all
three start to their feet.
It was Antoinette. She had come
into the salon and had heard the last
words. She was perfectly calm, but
she had pushed back all the fair hair
from her brow, and that and her
deadly pallor gave her a look of ex
treme desolation.
Arthur advanced quickly to lend
her to a chair. She gently put him
aside, and leaning one baud o;i tli?
table, she said: "It was not Battlste,
Messieurs; of that I can assure you."
"If, Madcinoiseiie, yuu have indeed
any proof." said Monsieur Tasset,
eagerly, "then it may Indeed save the
old man's life."
She sank into a chair, and her pa
thetic eyes turned from oue to an
other of the three anxious tacca.
"Messieurs," she said, "tell me the
truth as you hope for salvation. Will
Battiste bo condemned?"
A cold terror of what she might
be going to do or say struck upon
Arthur's heart. He spoke eagerly.
"Not necessarily, Antoinette.
Juries rarely convict on circumstan
tial evidence only. There is an ab
sence of motive admitted, and wo
have yet to communicate with your
cousin. "
She turned her eyes from him to
Tasset.
"An Englishman cannot bo fully
conversant with French law," she
said. "I conjure you to tell me the
truth. Will ho bo condemned?"
"I fear, I greatly fear," lie stam
mered.
Arthur shrank back, shrank back !
against ti!<? wall. Ho knew what waj |
coming. She turned to him with her j
eyes looking up to his, wild, despair
ing, terrified.
"No! no!" he cried. "Do not ask
ma! I cannot! " I
"Your oath!" she answered, in a;
voice out of which all tone had died
away.
"Heaven help me! Must It be?"
She only repeated once more,
"Your oath!"
As If under a resistless spell, he
placed tho talisman in her out
stretched hands. The silver case fell
to tho ground. In tho dead silence
that followed, they heard the clink
ing of tho metal a3 it rolled away
from under foot.
Antoinette had covcred her faco
with her hands. She remained so for
somo minutes, so long that Tasset
and tho Cure glanced at each other,
foarful lest she should have fainted.
Arthur never moved. Ho stood fas
cinated. motionless. Ho put his finger
to his lip when they would havo inter
rupted her.
At last she put down her hands
and rose slowly to her feet, and tho
three men started with a thrill. A
most strange and awful change had
passed over her, nil tho softness had
gone out of her fnc?. It was hard,
rigid, carved In marble, like that of
Medusa. Tho Irtrge, gray eye3
strained wide r. pen, the lips apart;
all tho wild, fair hair, blown back
ward, seemed to stand erect round
hor head as If it had been a halo. She
saw nothing, heard nothing of those
beside her. Then for tho first tlmo
tho two perceived that she held be
tween her hands, In a strange, stilT
way, a slender willow wand, and they
knew Instinctively what It. was.
"No, no," cried the Cure, springing
forward; but the Mayor put his hand
on his arm; he was watching with a
strange fascination.
"Oently, gently, Monsieur le Cure,"
ho said. "Who darea say that this
power is other than from Heaven!"
Then the Cure also drew back, and
they stood watching. AntolnettD
was on tho scent.

FARMERS' TEAR BOOK.
Valuable Publication Issued By Vir

The Virginia-Carolina Chemical
Company has issued a handsome
Farmers Year Book that does im
mense credit to the enterprise of that
progressive eorporation. The Year
Book contains a vast fund of valu
able infoimation that will interest
and instruet every fnrmer. It is not
a mass of advertisements of the pro
duets of the company nor yet a lot
of testimonials but it contains really
indispensable information. The out
put of the Virginia Carolina Com

Virginia, is too well and favorably
known throughout the country to
need much iu the way of advertising,
so the annual is more in the nature
of a handbook of useful information,

Odds and Ends.
Women don't have to swear to

Some people are so proud of their

Some women are such slaves to

Perhaps you can't help feeling en

It is no direct evidence that you
