BIG STAKE RACES
AT STATE FAIR
For theFirst Time South Caro
lina VleU Stake Rr.Cf#"Eig
, Entries.
Columbia. 8. C.?(Special.)?In all the
life of the State Fair?forty years?
there have never been anything liter
the race a thut are sclicduh il fur this
year. The fair o;itns October 26th and
closes October 3>th. There will Lc foui
days of racing. Already Ave *:ta!:e
races have been arranged for trotters
and pacers. Purses wiil be offered for
both harness and running horses.
Between $6,000.00 and S7.UOC.OO has
been offered as prizes for these raecs.
The attractive prizes, together with the
fact that so many of the Northern and
Kastern tracks have had trouble with
the racers, will make tlx? entries litre
fair week the best aggregation of fast
horses ever seen anywhere in the
South.
Strings of horses from the most re
nowned stables in the country will be
here fair week. With the rnee* nearly
two months off. the entries for the
stake races counted up to ninety-three,
ind It Is expected that more th.m a
hundred of America's finest racers will
be entered for the stake races.
The purse races will be much above
the average this year. More money Is
offered and better horses will be raced.
The track has been put in apple pic
order and the grandstands enlarged
and reworked. This was necessary to
accommodate the lmmeti.se crowds that
will witness all of the races during fair
week, this being the first of the series
in tho Virginia-Carolina Circuit.
There will be other sports. Davidson
College.plays Clem son on Wednesday,
and the University of Seuth Carolina
plays Davidson College on Thursday.
Mr. It. C. Keenan will have the races
In charge, and he knows his business.
President Mobley expects the races
this year to bring people to the fair
from every part of the State and from
many surrounding Stutes.
