*>f Kit I ho people to the rapid

:i. - ??? i j oiio has heard of the
Appalachian Forest Reserve
sol <?tne which Speaker Cannon
pi-fMsi ?utly declines to allow to
come to a vote in the U. S.
/JO f Representatives, but
few understand the vital inc
p.- rtauce of the measure to the
en I in* country. Jtgoes without
Saying that a well wooded sec
lion is never overflowed to an
appreciably damaging extcut,
and the prevention of a damaging
overflow is largely the object of
tho forestry bill no v pending in
House of Representatives.
Hii* is a just bill, and when the
Almighty has sufficiently pun
ished tne Democratic parly He
.vill allow the election of u
Democratic house and Senate,
and the Appalachian Parle bill
a-ill become a law,
A good roads system is how
?v>?r equally as important as a
Joiertry reserve system, and
happily this is within our reach
without our being compelled to
await the whim of the Speaker
oi the National House of Repre
sentatives. We were promised
during the political campaign
just closed thift a convention of
our citizens would bG called iin
- mediately after tho election to
suggest ways and means look
ing to the betterment of our
present road system. Lot that
meeting of citizens be called at
an early date. We canuot just
pee but one system that will
prove efficacious, and that is a
system of taxation with road
working by contract, each con
tractor being bonded, and di
rectly under tho supervision of
a compotont road enguieer.
It is possible that other plans
may bo better than this, but this
is tho plan usually followed
throughout tho country.

ATTENTION. DEMOCRATS.
We have been requested to

ihe request with pleasure. There
should rest in tho mind of no
dune, disinterested citizen any
doubt tis to tho importance to
the country at large of Bryan

Nation by the defeat of the De

increased tariif robbery through
the continued protection of trusts
and combines of every nature,
tt will mean tne continued op
pression of tho many for the
benefit of tho few. It will fur
ther mean tho further per ver
sion of the fundamental princi
ples of our government with the
almost certain alternative of
radical and harmful changes in
tho conduct of National affairs.
In ordor to obviuto aud pre

National Democratic Commit

COMPLETE ELECTION. RE
TURNS.
The complete returnes from
the election as tubulated ond de
clared by tlie Btate executive
committee shows I he tremendous
figure of 110,000 voles as cast in
the State. The record is phe
nomenal and will probably not
be eqtialed in many years.
E. D. Smith for United States
Senator won out over John Gary
Evans by a majority of about
30,000, the actual figures being,
Smith, 09,318, Evans, 39,055.
This was a la iJ slide which we
do not >n the least regret
Mr. John E. Swearingen <fb
feated his oppouent., Mr. S. 11.
Mellichamp by a vote of 01,286
to 48,291, the majority being
12,999. The most exciting race
was that of Cansler of Tirzah
aud Banks L. Caughman for
Railroad Commissioner; Caugh
uian winning by the narrow mar
gin of 797 votes,
In the election for county offi
cials; I. J. McKeipie defeated W.
B. Turner for Superintendent of
Education, J. S. Tranlhatn is re
elected Sheriff over G. Arthur
Moseley, and G. Lucas Dixon is
nominated for Coronor over M.
G. Huckabeo.
We congratulate the wholt
people that, the result of the two
primaries has left so few heart
burnings. Naturally we, per
sonally are not exactly satisfied
as we lost out on several votes,
but we have the satisfaction of
knowing that old Kershaw coun
ty will be served by as honest
aud capable a set of officers us
those who were retired tempo
rarily.
What Can Be Done In
This State.
Speaking of the efforts of the
Department of Agriculture to
stimulato interest in live stock
raising in South Carolina, Hon.
E. W. Dabbs, of Goodwill, Sum
ter County, said Yesterday that
eight years ago his little boy
had been made a present of a
pair of sheep.
Sinco that time the increase
from those two sheep had been
over 25 head and they had
sold $200 worth of wool and six
had been killed for mutton. In
addition to this many wool blan
kets had been made.
The value of cattle raising
upon the farm was touched upon
by Mr. Dabbs, too. In addition
to the receipts for beef and hide,
I Mr. Dabbs asserts that from
every $25 worth of ootton seed
meal or hulls fed tho cows, $20
is returned in manures for the
farm. Then again there is tho
good valuo of butter, choeso and
milk.?The State, September 5.
