Now'that the toll bridge oyer the Watcpee river lias been de stroyed, with qo prospect so fai ls we can learn of its l?eing re built \jy the Waterjao fridge jOompany, we wq,nt to know what1 ^the people of Kershaw county are going to do about it. Jt goes xritho'ut guying tljat (here must b an avenuo Of communication etwee'n Camden and the western section of our county. The poun 'ty seat is $t present absolutely pat' ott iron)' that section, and 'perforce will be for months to tame. The situation if long con tinued, will become intolerable, pot- only to the people of West *Wateree but to every section of ] Ihe county, Wljftt is to be done fjkboul |t? In our opinion |t will ijot be pecessary tip await the action of the Legislature to begiu the work on this oridge. It seems to us that 'our board of Commissiouers a.je vested with ample power to-in augurate tlje wqpk, and the L<ogis '^ature can afterwards aqthorige ^.he issuance of tyjnds to com plete }t. We htvvp rjo doubt, that xhe Wateree Bridge pom puny will gladly dispose of its in terest in tho bridge site, and will welcooqe tlje installation of a free bridge system. The Most Tremendous flood in our History, A FORTY-FOOT {FRESHET Jn the WATEREE RIVER fully Half-Milfion Property Los?. On Monday evening (An#? 24th) an alarming warning reached this city of an almost immediate rise of a serious nature in the Watereo river. Little attention was paid U) it as it whs looked upon as a cyy pf "Wolf" when there was go "wolf, but, the warning was tpo t.*ue, and tis a consequence numbers of our citizens are be reft of property which they'had labored hard to accumulate others have lost their lives in a raging soaof water which fact has brought grief unutterable to the homes of their families and friends. .^.bout 3 o'clock on Tuesday evening, the $>th ult., a me.v sage reached the city that the Watereo river br:dge had gone down, carrying with it about twenty people who were on it at1 the time, Among them were Mr, | George Rabon, a young son of a Mr. Ilinson, Mr. Henry Savage and a number of colored men, women and children whose names we have not ascertained. A nu.nbor of young men from the city wpre speedily upon the scene and with gallantry unsur passed in this prosaic age, suc ceeded in rescuing nearly all of the unfortunates. At this [writing nothing has been heard of Mr. Ilabon, the little ilinson child, and two colored women and a little colored child, all of whom it )? feared met death in the remorseless Mood. M*'? Havugo was rescued late in the evening fur down on the wes tern side of the river by Mr. 13. P. DeLoaeho and a colored man just as ho was ubout to succumb to weakness and nervous strain. All those interested in the *av ing of life on this occasion should receive the public thanks of tin? people. We warmly congratu late the survjvors of this most distressing occurrence, and con dole with the families of those who were so untimely cut olT. The property loss from this stupendous rise of water cannot be estimated. The freshet at this point was not less than forty-one feet, and when we re member that thirty-threo 1'iet was the highest recorded rise in fifty years it can readily be seen that thousands upon thousands of acres of splendid corn and cotton havo been engulfed in the devouring maw of the water demon. A half million dollar property loss is a conservative estimate, while the loss to the city of ??awden through inter rupted communication with the people of West Watereo cannot bo estimated. General traffic will be almost completely sus pended for months, so tho fall trade may bo said to have been completely wiped out. It is now up to our Hoard of Trade to devise some plan by which tho trade and presence of the people of ihe practically iso lated section of the county tnav not be permanently lost to us. The only feasible plan that we can think of at present, is either to effect an arrangement with the Seaboard railway to rebate a portion, or all of the fare of passengers from all stations along their lino in this county who exhibit a certillcato that they are resident farmers or laborers, the Board to reim burse the road, or, for merchants to deduct tho railroad faro from the amount of bill of goods pur chased if the bill is of amount suflicient to warrant it, and if not, to deduct ten per cent from the amount, purchased. The lat ter plan we think will be tho piost elective, but in either o\eut, something must bo done and dono quickly. It is almost needless to s??y J hat wo but voico the sentiment of tho whole peoplo when wo say that wo (eel deeply for the jjootf sufferers, whether their loss be in prop, erty or family." A more detailed , tyccv'.jut of this unprecedented catastrophe will bo found on the ttrst or' fourth pages .of this issue. The disaster was general along a certain scope or territory, and extended as far as Augusta, Ga., where dwellings, stores, factories and other business houses were several feet under water while county roads and bridges, and railroad ?racks and treaties have sustained damages that, it will take years to replace. In apology to our readers who were disappointed in uot rn ceiving an account *Of the bridge disaster last week, we will say that it was impossible for us to secure an authentic report be -j fore going to press, so concluded to hold over the whole matter until this issue.
