the spe.ephes of the many candi

The tfififiilpg was called to or

Jntrodpped iu his usual graceful

several offices from township
commissioners to Clerk of Court,
?^hese syeepljes consumed about
pyiQ hours, as at half past twelve,
phairaian JJilton announced a re

Well, we had the dinner, and
>uch a. $ini)er. It was a sight to
lemp.t the appetite of an epicure,
pnd while vwe do upt profess to
that Kind of an insect, we
certainly eujoyed it. Our West
yille friends are noted for their
hospitality, y,jjd on this occasion
lost uothing m reputation for
J,hat quality.
Speech- making was resumed
at 1:30 o'clock and the candidates
for the Legislature announced
as follows; W. A* Sohiock, M.
p. (Smith ?iid Jho. G. Richards.
Candidate pchrock made a twen
Ky minutes talk, the salient fea
lures of which were, "necessity
for changes in a number of ex
isting jaws, a promise, if elected,
po at least fry to do something
for the yoi\\ benefit of the people,
expressed confidence that, lie
jwould be nominated, and advised
fhe voters to d>'aw straws for
phoice of the second nomiuoo as
^ither of them would be agree,
able to higi. He denounced the
Immigration bureau and the lien
jaw. As to the liquor question
Jie was in favor at the present
time of continuing the county
dispensary system as he thought
it preferable to any other sys
tern of handling, or not hand
ling intoxicants. The speaker
closed amid slight applause with
Renewed expressions of confi
pence that he would be endorsed
pn August 25th by a majority of
fhe voters of Kershaw county,
Hon. M. J* Smith followed.
His speech was devoted to an ex
tent to witticisms at the expense
pt candidate Sohiock. Xn tho
plain however, he made a very
plover talk on education, taxa
Jlon, good roads and immigra
tion. Qn tl)p lattor subject we
thought he was a little vague,
We failed to patoh the difference
(10 found jn the terms MA literary
>ureau for advertising the re?
sources and advantages of the
State," and "An Advertising
^ureau" for tho same purposes.
Mr Smith was very emphatic
jn his remarks oil tho liquor
question. Ho lauded the old
dispensary law (not its manage
ment or enforcement) but said
Jhat as between county dispell*
purifs aud absolute prohjbition,
}?o would vote for a prohibition
law. He endorsed the position

Capi. Juo. Q. Richards closed
Ihe speaking b3 Um Legislate
eaiylidaUs, and m usoti made a
good talk. Hi* speech yas prac*
Uc^Djr iloof all of the lines of
argument adyauced by M r.
?mith wbiph was bi)t natural as
he stated that tbey bad conferred
together concerning several of
thetp. The principal point of
difference that we could see in
?he two addresses barring ver
biage, was on the Immigration
Bureau. The impression con
veyed to our mind is that Mr.
Richards sees much of good in
the bureau, but thinks its opera
tions should be carefully safe
guarded* His speech was some
what more lengthy than those of
the other t wo candidates, but his
hearers just wouldu't let him
come down uutil he hud tolJ
them that fox story. This lie
did in a humorous manner, and
promised thut.if returned to the
Legislature, he would have tbe
fox law repealed iu one minute
and a half.
Like Mr. Smith he grew o lit
tle witty at the expeuse of can
didate Schioclc and told one joke
that hud g.*ey whiskers oii it
about a little dog ruuning after
a train, the joke being intended
we suppose to point a moral und
adoru his tail.
1 he four candidates for Solici
tor were then introduced in the
following order: Geo. R. Rem
bert, B. B. Clarke, Christie
Benet and W. Bamptou Cobb.
All of them received close at
tention, and it is unquestionable
that all made favorable lmpres
sious. Messrs. Rembert and
Benet made no effort towards
jollity but devoted themselues
exclusively to the business of
the hour not, because there is no
humor in them for there is.
Mr. Clarice, aside from his own
personality, being Hie county
candidate, was received with
considerable applause on rising,
and dolivere(L?*t stirring speech
which toolc well with his hearers,
and he was rewarded at its con
clusion with an ovation. The
remarks of Mr. Cobb were witty,
wise and appropriate, and any
hearer who did not enjoy them
is the possessor of neither hu
mor, wit or wisdom.
We wish wo could spare the
space to go into detail on the
speeches of the other candidates.
If we had, they would certainly
go in. ?.fc|l of them however are
well Icuown to a majority of you,
so you will have to excuse us
for not printing THE PEOPLE
on sheets of india rubber which
stretches to any length and
width desired. Wo can only
satisfy ourself and you by say
ing that the candidates for Sheriff
covered themselves with glory,
for Superintendautof Education,
the same, and that those for
the other offices gave an exhibi*
tion iu oratory that could not be
surpassed at any school of elo
cution iu this country.
It is impossible for us to give
you an account of the meeting
at Abney on Friday. Important
business that could not bt ne
gleoted prevonted our atten
dance there, and our reporter
failod to send in his notos.
The Blaney meeting too on
Tuesday of this woolc will have
to be deferred until next week
as we make up our paper 011
Tuesday in order to print the
next day and get it in the hands
of most of our pal rons on Thurs
day.

To the Voters of Kersbav i
Oovnty;
I take pleasure fa hanging you
? condeused platform on which I
hope to be nominated and elect*
ed ooe of your legislators at the
August Primary and tj^e Novem
bsr election.
1. I advocate rigid economy
in t*ie couduct of our Btate gov
ernment in appropriations of
whatever nature except that for
the benefit of Confederate vet*
eraus.
.
2. J am a strong- advocate of
good roads, and favor radical
changes in our preseut laws re
lating to roads. Road working
by taxation is the only sensible
way to dispose of the problem.
3. Education is the bulwark
of our civilization. I favor pro
gress all aloug the line but more
especially do I want the scope
of the common schools enlarged
and will work towards that end
if elected.
4. I am opposed to the im
position of a commutation tax
on persons under 21 years of
uge. This is taxation without
representation.
5. I do not favor the proposed
Home for Old Soldiers, If the
Stuto has money to spare for
that purpose, let its legislature
appropriate it direct to the old
soldier.
C. I am opposed to foreign
immigration and want the bureau
abolished, substituting therefor
an advertising bureau for the
dissemination of literature amoug
the citizens of other States of
the Uuiou, showingour resources
and advantages. America for
Americans.
7. I am not in favor of cot I on
growing on the State farms,
but want all cereals raised there
on that are necessary for the use
of the penitentiary and other
State institutions.
8. I do not favor the estab
lishment of a fertilizer factory,
unlcxa capital punishment is
abolished, in which event I will
favor putting lifetime convicts
in the phosphate beds, and as
many of those serving shorter
terms as may be necessary in a
fertilizer" factory to supply our
farmers with fertilizers at cost.
9. A number of laws on our
Statute Books are inoperative,
and a numhur of others require
revision. I will endeavor to
have the first abolished, and the
second revised. ?
10. I shall muke the interests
of Kershaw Couuty paramont in
my service as a Legislator, and
will guard the interests of the
whole people, irrespective of
class or occupation.
11. As regards the Liquor
Question, I am not in favor of
any change in existing law at
present. We are doing very
well under it. The oountry at
large is us orderly as wo could
expect it to be if a change was
made now. The seutiment of
the nation is tending rapidly to
wards prohibition, but in our
judgement the timo is not ripe
for it 111 South Carolina. When
I consider that it is, X will glad
ly voto and work for the euaot
ment of a prohibition law if un
effective one can be devised,
The above I think about eov.
ers the principal questions be
fore tlio people. If others arise,
I will give my best thought and
effort to assist in settling them
to your satisfaction.
Respectfully,
\'l!\ (,1. Scfiloefc.
