Jt strikes us that the parent*, guardians and teachers of Mi* youth in this strenuous age are paying two little attention' to the, dissemination of good literature among that class. In using the words, "good literature" we don't want to be qpisunderstood ms favoring the recommending the ponderous style of writing which is affected, and by many x>f the older generation, really enjoyed . Our meaning is simply to suggest that a number of books of light fiction, the plot of which contains a moral, should be placed within the reach of the ^young. There are also a num ber of books which would in terest the growing boy and girl ftljat contains nothing but fact, which cannot but be of benefit jand pleasure to them. In th':s period of cheap literature an at tractive library for our boys and girls can be obtained at slight .cost, and the small outlay will ,be repaid to you many times over in the pleasure, interest and benefit that will accrue to you through the more heulthful con. dition of mind of your benefici pries. , "We are writing tbia as a gra iuitous advertisement of one of the very b^est books for boys that .has ever come before us. It is "HAROLD WARE," and fs furnished by the Commercial f'oiijtry Publishing Co., Mar Illinois, in whose paper, <"G<?ii)a}?rcial Poultry" it has ?een running several months as a serial story. The book is sold at 75 cents in paper .cover which includes aa annual subscription to the paper, jtn cjoth finding, the cost is $1.50 including the subscription. As we have stated, we have no interest, direct or indirect in this publication, but we do feel # great interest in the young people of this, and "every com tnunity, and we feel that nothing but good can come out of the placing of a copy of HAROLD WARE* in every home contain }ng children. We well remember our heart hunger for books in our early youth when the price for books was practically prohibitive to the poor, and eveu now, though jnauy yours have pussed ov^r pur head, we recall the warm J^el'mir of gra'iiuiln that tilled our bi'iiiK vyii" u liiencl of uiuUirer year* e$ieuded to us the loan of pne or more volumes of history or ad ve illume. That feeling of grati tude still exists, and we are glad to say that the bread tha't was past upon the waters in our early youth has been returned by us )u some measure to those who ^oolc hi) interest in the penniless ,t>oy who thirsted after know ledge, and who could not have obtained it except for the ex tension 0/ that interest. OUR NEW YORK LETTER. The writer is deluged at times jv i 1 1 > inquiries fur the addresses pf Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Helen Gould, Mrs. Russell Bage and other ncuiti /nillionaire philanthropists. Per. sons reading of their ffifts have an idea that tl)ey can be induced to give if ouly a letter appealing Jo them oan reacji them. From this it can be seen the prospect for aid from such peo ple is slim indeed, although given and given liberally. The routine and red tape through which the successful ones pass equals the getting a bill through Congress. The scientific claim of having transplanted from one dog to another the head of one of the uuimals, has led the speculative to calculating that in time human heads cuu be shifted iu like uiunuer. Much space is being given to the discussion of the subject. It is being predicted that the old head can be severed and transpiunted to young shoulders and the owuer live through an other generation. What would become of the young head on old shoulders has not yet been touched upon. H. W. Finlnyson, 444 Broadway. Twenty-ninth Annual Mountain Excursion via Southern Railway August 14th. OPENING OF THE COUNTY CAMPAIGN. Every Candidate, on Hand, and a Number of Fair Speeches Delivered. The Countv Campaign was formally opened at Beaver Dam in West Wateree on last Friday, Mr. M, B. Rabon being the Chair man, or, master of ceremonies. The order of spea Icing was from coronor to solicitor. None of the candidates for minor oftices interested the audiance of about 250 voters much as they had really very little to talk about. The real interest in the meet ing oentred in the candidates for the Legislature and for Solicitor. As candidates for the first men tioned office, Messrs. .John G. Richards, W. A. Kclirock and M. h Smith, in the order named, held the almost undivided at tention of the audiance for about twenty five minutes each with tfct jHNWtajfl/ PIH/ to eaeb candidate. Poultry joints The farmers who are careless regarding the kinds of fowls to Weep, pay well for their indifference. They may content themselves with the belief that "one fowl is as good ns another," but they are governed by old customs and usages instead of experience. Compared with common fowls, i he pure breeds are more useful; they lay more eggs; some varie ties come to maturity sooner; they are far more quiet gener ally; at maturity the cockerels make fine birds, and the pullets 4ood winter layers. Flocus of common kirils noticed on some farms cause loss to their owners and are a drawback to any farm in these days of progress and im provement. It costs but little to begin with pure breeds, and in me year thu farmer can have a handsome Hook of nice, thrifty, useful breeders that will give natisfuction and pay liberally for their keeping.
