We demand Federal lsgislation for ever terminating the partnership which hss existed between corpora tions of the country and the Republi can party Under the expressed or im plied agreement that in return for the contributions of great sums of money wherewith to purchase elec tions they should be showed to con tinue substsntislly unmolested in their efforts to encrosch upon the rights of the people. Any reasonable doubt as to the ex istence of this relation has been tor over dispelled by the sworn testimony of witnesses examined in the insur ance investigation in New York, and the open admission unchallenged by the Republican national committee of s single individual, that he himself at the personal request of the Repub lican candidate for the presidency raised over a quarter of a million of dollars to be used iri a single State during the closing hours of the last campaign. In order that this prac tice shall be stopped for all time, w? demand the passage of a statute pun ishing with imprisonment any officer of a corporation who shall eithc* contribute on behalf of# or consent to the contribution by a corporation of any money or thing of value to bo used in furthering the election of a President and Vice PicsiiVnt of the United States or of any member of tie Congress thereof. *Ve denounce the action of lhe Rer '.iBlican party, having compare dilroi of the Federal governmo ?!, for its failure to pass the bill intro duced in the last Congress to com pel the publication of t.ic names ?f contributors and the amounts con tributed towarl campaign funds, and point to the evidence of their in sincerity when they sought by an absolutely irrelevant and impossible amendment to defeat the passage of the bill. Iho Rights of the States. Believing with Jefferson in "the support of the State governments in all their rights as the most competent administration for our f'?)m<?tie con cerns and the surest bulwark against, anti-republican tendencies" and in "the preservation of the general gov ernment in its whole constitutional vigor, as the sheet-anchor of out peace at home and safety abroad." wo are opposed to the centralization implied in these suggestions, now frequently mnde, that I he powers of the general government should be extended by judicial construction. Economy in Administration. The Republican Congress in session jnst ended has ma<>; appropriation! amounting to $1,003,000,000, ex? cecding tho total expenditures of the past fiscal year bv $90,000,000 and leaving a deficit of more tnan $(fo,. 000,000 for the fiscal year. Natural Resources. We repeat the demand for internal development and for the eonservation of our natural resources, contained in previous platforms, the enforcement of which Mr. Roosevelt has vainly lought from a reluctant party and to that end we insist upon the preserva tion, protection and replacement of nocded forests, the preservation of tho public domain for home seekers, the protection of the natural resources in timber, coal, iron and oil against monopolistic control, the develop ment of our watorwaya for naviga tion and every other useful purpose, including the irrigation of arid lands, the reclamation of swamp lands, the clarification of streams ,the develop ment of water power and the preser vation of electric power generated by this natural force from the con trol of monopoly; and to snsh end, we urge the exercise of ail powers, na tional, State and municipal, both sep arately and ia co-operation. The panic of 1907, coming without anr legitimate excuse, wheu the Re publican party had for a decade beer, in complete control of the Fedral government, furnishes additional proof that it is either unwilling or incom potent to protect the interests >f the general public.
