THE U. S. SENATORSHIP
An anomalous condition con
fronts our people in the race
now ou lor the nominatioirfor
the at preseut vacant seat in the
United States ScuaLe. We use
the words, Mat present vacant
seat" advisedly, as all know that
Senator Gary is merely a filler ,
be merely replacing the lameu ted
Latimer after publicly announc
ing that he would not be a can
didate for electiou for the full
term, The reason for this ac
tion on his part is generally un
derstood to be that he did not
wish to butt in, or thwart the am
bition of liiscousin, Ex Governor
John Gary Evans in his candi
dacy for the place. Do that as
it may, Senator Gary is not a
candidate, and the contest re
solves itself into a four cornered
race between Messrs. George
Johnstone, John Gary Evans, U
Goodwyu Illielt and O. 13 Mar
tin, with so far, no formei' fac
tional lines drawn. We elimi
nate Mr. E. D. Smith from the
race as we consider him out of
the running.
We will assume that some one
or more of the candidates will
attempt to draw factional lines
for no other purpose than to en
deavor to secure votes that they
could not otherwise get. This
being admitted to be a strong
probability, wo are curious to
Jcnow what our people are going
to do as regards a choice among
the quartet. How are they go
ing to square their actions with
the feelings that actuated them
iu |,he stormy days of 1800 and
1892? Wi^l they vote what may
be called a partisan vote, or, will
they come boldly to the front,
and vole to place in theUuited
Stales Senate thiit man who will
best represent us, casting behind
them all past fractional dif
ferances?
Here, reader, we havo come to
'?the parting of the ways". You
must in this coming election
either prove yourself a true citi
Ken of this great Stale by cstst
ing your ballot for the very best
that is offered you in the way of
a candida te for the august po
sition of your representative in
tho United States Senate irre
spective of dead factional dif
fereuces, or, brand yourselves
partisans of a cause that served
its purpose well for tho common
people, but which being now
practically a back number, does
not appeal to the sober common
sense of any voter of average in
telligence.
We want to soleinly warn each
and every one of you against,
the cry of the demagogue. You
will easily recognize it, for it
will be raised in the attempt to
Inflame your passions, aud not
to appeal to your reasou.
In connection with this ccn
tost, wo want to impress upon
you tho fuel that the internal
affairs of our State have 110
place in tho picture. You are
fairly up to the proposition t lint
either fanaticism or common
sense shall prevail. You nrc go
in# to elect u man who will rep
resent tho whole people, or you
are going to send to tho upper
house of the United States Con
gress ft politic inn who will rep
resent you only when such rep
resentatiou does not conflict with
hisow-n selfish interests. Which
representative of the two do you
prefer friend; the man who has
fin eye single to your interest,
or, him who is ever scheming
/or self advancement? We think
we see in perspective your tin
swer when tho votes are counted
oil the night of the grith of Au
*> n H. , .
As to ourself. wo have care
fully weighed tho qualifications
of tho several candidates, and
um advice to j* to vote for
%
G.>or$re Johnstone of NewbcffyT
We believe him to be the brain,

man in public life In tbls Slltt

want the best, and we wont our

best is George Johnstone.
COUNTY JOB PRINTING.
Our attention lias been called
to the practice of our vartoas
county officials of giving out such
job work as they may be in need
to one or the other of the job of
priuting offices iu the city with
out mulling requisition on the
county supervisor for the tup
plies needed.
This is a practice that should
be stopped. We do not know,
nor do we believe that any in
dividual job office proprietor in
this city has a pull with any offi
cial of the. city or county, but we
do know that if the requisition
mentioned was made, the county
would be the gaiuer by at least
forty per cent on the prices at
present paid for job work unde?
the present system. In fact, we
ate not exact-lj positive, buttbuik'
that the law requires that this
class of woi k be done through
the couuty supervisor. I'..
In auy event, the county vrill
be in money by re-adopting the
practice ua suggested.
