cently and arrived at the con
clusion that it docs pu-y a fair

the payment of subscriptions,

us promptly.
In our recent retrospect we
glauced over uccounts owed by
good men which if paid m the
aggregate would absolutely free
us of debt and leave us a suffi
cient amount to put in other job
atock and supplies.
Our own experience of years
ftgo is only a single iustance or
hundreds that existed then and
which exists now. Our own
- Credit has been always good,
and for that reason we would
oft-times turn down oiJIs that
were presented to us, iu mauy
instances Jaughliugly remark to
the creditor that he didn't need
the money. This was naturally
annoying to the creditor, but
kuowiug the account to be good,
they waited. We hope our good
frieods will take to heart this
little reminisceuce, and will
come promptly to our assis
tance.

Undergo** Surgical Operation in
Washington.
Washington, Feb. 17.? Fol
lowing an operation for a twist
of the bowels, Senator Asbury
0. Latimer of South Carolina,
for live terms a member of the
house of representatives and
, aince 1903 a member of the sen*
Hie, is lying in a critical con
dition tonight at the Providence
hospital here.
Senator Latimer, wlio is 57
years old, liud nol been feeling
well for a week. At midnight
Saturday he was suddenly tultou
worse and wus removed at once
to the hospital for an operation
for appendicitis. It ?us dis
covered when the incision hud
been made that the trouble was
more grave than expected, and
thai theintestiues wero involved.
An operation was performed
*"d at its conclusion it
was announced that, though
hope was felt for his recovery
the outcome was by no means
oertaio.

at the Providence hospital,

citis, but the surgoons discovered

This was straightened out audi
the wound sewed up, but the
?enutor's condition was con.
?Idered critical. The hospital
authorities report that he is do
log a. well as could be expected
and that they fully expect him
to recover. Mrs. Latimer has u

husband and is assisting in the

The senator was in bed sevoral
days last week with a slight

there was something serious the
matter. The physicians dlag*
nosed the case as appendicitis
and took him to the hospital for
an operation.

Still Later ? At this hour 11
p. m. Senator Latimer is report
ed very much better, and while
his condition is still serious, his
/atnily and friends feel so' much
encouraged as to express the be
lief that he will recover. Still
the ordeal has been so severe
that until the three days allow
ed by the sur^eoos before the
crises is considered as passed
there is considerable anxiety.
This three days will expire to*
morrow at 1 p. m. The senator
hod a hard night last night. Af
ter the hour of midnight when
the dispatch to The State vras
sent he began to feel an acute
pain in the locality of the wounds
made by the two operatious and
this was so intense that mor
phine had to be administered a
number of times. Throughout
the day until after dinner this
evening the physicians and the
family were iu despair, believ
ing that there was uo hope for
his recovery, but tonight he
woke up with a temperature ap
proaching normal and with no
pain aud with other symptoms
which are decidedly euoour
aging. Ail the senator's family
are with him except his son,
Carroll Latimer, who lives in At
lanta- He will arrive tomorrow
morning. Mrs. L?. M. Heard,
the senator's oldest daughter,
who lives at Elberlon, G a., ar
rived this morning. It so hap
pened that she was expected
here at this time on a visit.
The family have received a large
number of telegrams of symya
tliy and inquiry today from
friends in ?South Carolina who
read the dispatches this morn
ing. ? The State.

Tomato and
Watermelon Culture.
I have for years been a con
stant reader of Home and Farm,
and from its columns have re
ceived much valuable informa
tion. Congratulating the paper
for giving to its readers the
privilege of exchanging views
and of giving t-o one another our
experiences which we find pcofi
table, I will tell you how I raise
tomatoes and watermelons, and
have fine success. First, mark
off rows six feet one way and
three feet the other, dig a hole
in each checic deep and large
enough to hold a medium sized
scoopfulof manure, which should
be as near rotten as possible, and
one tablespoon l'ul of good plios
phate fertilizer, rake in a liule
loose earth and thoroughly mix
it with the manure and fertilizer,
Then on top of this make a good
hill, not larger than the circuin
ference of the hole, and about
level with the top of the ground.
Begin at one corner of the
patch and plant every other hill
in watermelons. By doing this
you will tinu that your water
melons will not bo Jess than
eight -or nine feet apart, which
gives ample room for growth.
Then set one tomato plant in
each of your skipped hills.
Plow both ways, and give clean
cultivation, increasing your hills
in size at each working. I never
prune nor stick tomatoes, but let
them fall down if season is wet.
