Connection.
In connection with our edi*
torial nidation of the Wateree
River navigation, we failed to
note the fact that the several
speakers failed to call attention
to the fact that with the removal
of present obstructions in the
bed of the river, in the shape of
rocks, trees, &c, the danger of
destructive freshets will be
appreciativly decreased. Making
a conservative estimate of the
cubic feet of obstructions in our
river, we place them at 1, 000,000
cubic feet. With these obstruc
tions removed, it stands to rea
son that this volume of water will
flow unobstructed to its e*it with
the result as stated /This fur
nislyes an added' argument why
(he Wateree should be opeued to
turiftic.

Death.
It is with an ucute feeling of

of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Workman.
What accentuates this feeling is
i that in the issue of THE PEO- j

say to those who kuow us that
had we learned of the death bo j

KII,Li;i> AT 11 KT HUNK,
Lucas Scott Crushed to Ocatli
by Pnssenuer Train while
Trying to Cross Track.
Betiiuue, Jan. 17. Little Lu
cas Scot i, the 9 year old son of
Mr. Walter Scott, was instantly
lulled yesterday about 11:45
by the southbound passenger
train at the Main street cross
ing in this place. According to I
eye witnesses* the little hoy was
attempting to cross the railroad
on Main street on his way home
from school when a long freight
train going north on the side
track commenced moving off iu
front of the hoy. He was be
tween the main line and side
track In moving baca from the
freight train the little fellow got
on the main line and the passen
ger coming in at this time he
was struck by the train, the im
pact crushing one side of his
head and dislocating his neck*
The train was so near the little
boy when he stepped on the
track it was utterly impossible
to stop.
The verdict of the coroner's
inquest was "that little Lucas
Scott came to his death by be
ing struck by a southbound pas
senger train." No blame is at
tuched to the railroad people. ?

Ten Chances to One for the
Baby.
"A century ago the anxious
parent ol the uew-born babe hud
good reason to be uneasy," says
Dr. Woods Hutcluuson, in writ
ing on ?'The Irrepressible Ten
dency of Baoies to Grow Up, "
in the Februry Woman's Home
Companion. "That was still
the age of dirt and a huge infant
mortality. "
Less than half the children
born lived to be five years old ?
in London, in 1750, 74.5 per cent,
died ? and more than one third
perished iu the first year. Now
such a condition is rapidly dis
appearing, and remains only in
our slum and most ignoruut
peasant communities.
To day the average morality
in the first five years of child
life in the entire United States
is less tlmu twenty per cent.
The mortality for the^Hrst year,
about ten per cent, and elimina
ting the slums and our foreign
population, the rate is nearly
tlireo per cent, lower yet. So
that yonr baby, gentle reader,
has ten chancer to one of reach
ing his first birth-dtiy, five to
one of reaching his fifth, and
three to one of attaining jiduli
life. Surely this is not an out
look to justify serious worry or
constant anxiety for fear that
some dreadful tiling will hap
pen." #
