Death.
Nothing recently Ims given
us more sincere sorrow than the
news of the deutli at Andover,
Mass., on Friday last of our es
teemed friend, Capt. Joseph W.
Smith. We are not informed as
to the exact cause of death, but
infer that the weight of years
was too great a burdeu for him
to carry longer. The deceased
was in the seventy sixth year of
his age, a great hearted man,
whose genial presence will be
missed by a wide circle of friends
and acquaintances. We join with
the family in a sen?e of mutual
loss for he who has left us was
our friend indeed.

there will be perhaps three hun
dred ministers of the Methodist
faith in attendance. The con
ference will be in session from
Thursday until Monday. Trinity
M. E. Church has been recently
repaired, and ample preparation
made to entertain the visitin#
bretheren and sisters. The
nightly sessions of the confer

interesting, and all white peo

BREVITIES.

? Read Mr. C. C. Moore's new

has a professional card with us.
He is a sound lawyer, and a gen
ial gentleman.
?We call attention to the ad.
of the Camdeu Carriage and
Wagon Works. Mr, Humptou is
a tine workmuo, and guarantees
all work.
? The newly arranged ad. of
Nathun Levy, The Clothier
wnich appeared last week if at
tracting much atte'ution.
? Note change in ad of Dr. F,
Leslie Zemp this week. We ac
cidentally mude an error iu it
last week. These things will
happen occassionally, even in a
well regulated office.
? We call attention to correc
tion made by Hon. W. R. Piuclc
ney on the recent, Presentment
made by the Grand Jury. While
the matter doesn't strike us as
in the leust important, it may be
well that the correction be mude.
Another Hoiuici<le.
It is reported to us that an
other homicide 1ms beeu com
mitted iu Kersha* county. On
November 1st, two negroes,
William Kelly and Aiulj Johns,
in the Flat Hoc it neighborhood
becume engaged in an alterca
tion which resulted in Johns
breaking the leg of Kelly with
a hoe. As a tiuale to the affray
Kelly died ou the 14th in. St., erf
blood poisoning. A jury of in
quest was helcl on the 15th, and
the usual verdict rendered.
It is evident to us if the lo
cation of the blow is considered,
that Johns did not intend to kill
his opponent, but merely to dis
able him, so in any event a ver
dict of manslaughter only can be
rendered.

| A Correction.
[Editor People:
In the presentment of the
Grand Jury, made tit the recent
term of the Circuit Court of Ker
shaw County, it was stated that
the surplus funds of the County
had been invested. This was
the intention, and was so de
cided upon at a conference of
the County officials, the at
torney and committee of the
Grand Jury. The investment
business together with the other
matters having been discussed
previous to the convening of the
court, we hud every reason for
the assurance thut the matter
would be consummated as out- 1
lined, and therefore so re|?orted
it. We have since been informed
that the investments have not
been made, owing to some legal
or legislative obstacle which will
be arranged us speedily as pos
sible by the county attorney and
the legislative delegation and
the investments made as out
lined and approved. We think
there will t>e no difficulty about
the new court house fund, and
are satisfied that it will be ar
ranged iu the near future.
Tins correction is made to> you
