BANK FAILURES.
New York. Oct 25th. The Uni
ted States Exchange Bank did
not open its doors today because
of the closing of other banks and
the unusual demand for tnotiey.
The citshier reports that the
bank is perfectly solveut, but
that these times are extraordi
nary times, and that the tempo
rary suspension is necessary for
its protection and for the pro
tection of its depositors. This
buulc bus a capital of $100,000, u
surplus of $87,170 and individual
deposits of $880,970

The Union Trust Company closed
its doors today because of the
stringency in the money market.
It reports ussets of $28,000,000
and deposits of $21,000,000. The
capital , stock of the company is
$500,000, with a surplus of $3,
250,000.
Brooklyn, N. Y., Oct. 25th.
,The Borough Bank of Brooklyu
today unnounced a temporary
suspension. It has a capital of
$200,000, a surplus of $60,000 and
$85,000 of undivided profits. The
loan account is given as $2,650,
liOO and deposits of $3,250,000.
The above are only a few of
the numerous accounts which
reach us of bank embarrassments
that have receutly taken place.
What is the cause of them? The
country, according to Republi
can tooters, is in better shape
liuaucially than ever in its his- j
tory. No man who will or can
work, is poor. Yet, despite this
assumed fact, we tind the prices
of our itiurket products drag
ging. We tind our banks fail
ing, or temporarily suspending
for hick of money. We find our
cotton mills and other industries
hampered in their operations
from the same cause. What is
the remedy?
In reply to our first question,
wo will say that the cause of
this condition may be found in
an inelastic monetary system,
and in answer to the second, we
state that the solution may be
found in an elastic curraucy.
We are already ou record in one
of our local contemporaries on
this question of elastic currency,
so will notiutt'.ct our ideas on
you again.
Our views have not changed,
so if any of our solons and law
makers waiit to gather au idea
or so from our remarks of a half
dozen years back, they can ad
dress a card to either the Mes
senger or Chronicle, and we
have no doubt that the editor of
either paper will take pleasure
in furnishing the information
desired.
BE FAIR, SENATOR.
We notice that several of our
exchanges are raking Senator
Latimer rather severely over
the coals because of his i>osition
on the question of immigration.
The latest stricture, editorially
announced is in a vulued Colum
bia, S. C., exchange which says
that the Senator knows, or,
ought to know that the introduc
tion of Russian Jews, Greeks,
Italians and other Latin peoples
is prohibited uuder our immi
iX ration laws, and that only Ger
man, Scotch, Scandinavians,
English and Irish are eligible.
The exchange referred to goes
on to say that Senator Latimer
doosn't object to that class of
immigrants, which we think is a
/correct assertion. But, we want
to say that there are Germans
and Germans, Scandinavians and
ScandinaviAns, Scotchmen and
Scotchmen, Englishmen and
Englishmen and Irishmen and
Irishmen. We do not want the
scum of either nationality, yet
we can't seo what other class of
these peoples we are goiug to
get if the passage of the immi
grant is paid either by the State
or by private parties. An im
migrant to be worth his salt,
should be able not only to pay j

his own passage, vbal ? cr have
with dim a sum of money suffi
cient to insure him against want
until he ean secure remunera
tive employment To secure
that employment is an easy mat-,
ter. Ther? is no doubt in the
mind of any thoughtful person
that the demand tor labor far
exceeds the supply, nor that any
man or woman who is capable of
filling a place in the industrial
picture can obtaiu that place.
In this country it in only the in
different, the incompetent who
grumble because of lack of work.
Unfortunately, we have quite a
class of these, and it is this class
that makes a majority of our
labor troubles. The members
composing this class are clock
watchers, eye servants, work- 1
shiricers and dilatories. This is
the class tbat Senator Latiuier,
wants to exclude from our bor
ders, and he is eminently cor
rect. In the writing of the
above, we don't want to be mis
understood us tooting Senator
Lattmer's liorn for re-election,
for while we are personally
friendly, we don't care a snap
who is elected. ?

If a real hunter went down
there now, a man that knows
how to go into the woods quietly

get all the bears he wauted.

Roosevelt can not do. Hence,
his one poor she-bear."

tober 18th, 1007, to March 1st, 1008. ,

corporate limits or cities or towns, |

cshool of the State, Ministers in charge
of regular congregations, teachers em- I
ployed in public schools, school trus- j

sons permanently disabled and those
actually engaged iu the quarantine
service of the state are exempt from
the payment of road tax. All male j
persons between the ages of 18 and 60

the year.
The poll tax is $1.*
All information as to taxes will be
furnished upon application.

ceipts, state with whom the Taxpayer
lived in January last, and if known
by two names, give both, and be sure
to Rive Township and No. of School
District.
Mo lists of names for tax receipts
will be received unless the amount of
tax money is deposited with the said
list.
