His death was caused from a complication of diseases. A good, honest and useful citizen has been cut oft' in the prime of life, and is now en joying the reward of a well spent life, devoted to the ser vice of liis God, his family and , his country He is survived by his wife and several children to whom our sincerest sympathy is extended. Fatal Affray. The glorious 4th was marked by several fatal affrays in South Carolina, one occurring at Charleston, another at Darling ton, and still another at West ville in our county. The latter was a shooting which first com menced by a negro, Joe Kirk land shooting Mr. P. i* Hilton through the leg, breaking the leg bono, and through the shoul dor. We are informed that af ter Mr. Hilton fell, the negro deliberately walked up and snap ped the pistol in his face with evident intent to complete his murderous work. Others then took part in the affair, with the result that Joe was reasonably and properly filled with lead. Proper, but as a law-abiding citizen wo again protest against the farcical law which prohibits the carrying of coucealed wea pons. It simply places the re spector of the law at the mercy of the bravo and desperado. At last accounts Mr. Hilton was doing well, and the negro was shovelling coal. Thanks. Dunn was in Co lumbia last week on business connected with the dispensary and on other matters. ? Mr. and Mrs. Cbarlie Jones of Sumter, are visiting the fami* ly of the father of the latter, Mr. A. B Young at DeKalb. ? We are glad to announce that the son of Mr. W. R. Pinck tiey is steadily improving from a severe attack of typhoid fever. ? Ex Sheriff John Doby, for merly a well known and popular citizen of the county, but now a Texan, is spendiug a short time witn us. ? Miss Ida Young of Westville, spent a few days in the city last week, the guest of her sister, Miss Nannie Young, the head clerk of Whi taker & Burnet. ? Miss Annie Blake Fletcher of Westville had a narrow es cape from death on the 4th. Dur ing the scrimmage, a ball from one of the pistols used passed through her hair. ? Mr. Welch and Mr. W. Boyd Evans of the Columbia bur, weie in the city on Tues day. Their mission was, we suppose, connected with the dis pensary situation. ? Capt. J. C. Rollings, who is now a partial resident of Heath Springs, was with us on Tues day. He was accompanied by one of his brothers whose name has escaped us. ? Mr. J. T. Mackey, the popu lar cashier of the Commercial Buuk is at the Jamestown Ex position. During his absence, Mr. VV. R. Hough is discharg ing the duties of cashier. ? Mr. Henry Barfield has our thanks for a splendid cabbage sent us on Tuesday. It weighed 10 pounds. Henry told us that he had some that weighed 30 pounds, but thinking that one of that size would bo above our calibre, would not scud one in. Was Counsel From the Soutli. The State Board of Elec tions have not yet announced a time for the hearing of the con test on our recent election of bo gus prohibition vs. a sane way of handling the liquor question. Since the above was written, the State Board has called a hearing to day at 10 o'clock for a final decision ou tne protest so far as they are concerned at present.
