plSATH DEALING DISPKN
SAUY COMMUNICATION.
??In the quiet hours of the
pight, while we were setting
type of the death-dealing dis
pensary communications, etc.,"
. ? The Messenger.
Pretty good, that. Brother
Birchmore is emineutly correct
jn styliug the communications he
frefers to as death dealing, but
unfortunately his deductions are
jvrong. Every line in every arti
cle on the dispensary subject in
>113 paper this week is a mute
but eloquent witness to the cor
rectness of our position on the
subject that county prohibition
>8 a fraud and a farce, a bogus
kjnd pf an arrangement which,
while tickling the palate of a few
sentimentalists, cannot but re
pult in great injury to the general
public, both morally apd finan
cially. Talk to us about county
prohibition prohibiting. Faugh !
?'J'he thing makes us sick. We
have been a resident of this
ppjinty forty-six years. We are
sleeping every night in the same
jrqom in which wo were born.
Every fiber of our being is in
stinct with desire to advance the
fnoral and material welfare of
pur poople. In this desire we
believe that we have the co
operation of a majority of Hie
poople of the community. Wt.
re-assert this belief and trust in
?lod that we arc not mistaken.
Holding it then, wo are abso
Jutely houest in expressing the
}iopo that iu the election of to
day, the sentimentalist and self
seeker will be snowed under by
au avalauche of votes.
VHK DEMON OF THIS STILL.
We nolo with considerable in
terest tho leading editorial of
pur contemporary, The Chroni
pie of last week. In that edi
torial, whoever wrote it, (we as
sumo that it was a preacher) the
salo of whiskey is denominated
."The Demon of the Still." Cor
rect. There is no question in
the mind of any sensible, reason
ingor moral mantthat the manu>
facture and salo of intoxicants
Js an evil. Nevertheless, not
withstanding, in these days and
times, are not in the day and
timo quoted by that prencher
fis in tho day and timo of Isaiah.
We are living in an nge of ma
terialism, that materialism al.
>vays guided by a senso of
f.rue morality, So far as we!
Jiave seen by a perusal of the pub
lic prints, we have seen nothing
that points towards morality in
tho attempt to voto out dispensa
ries in Kershaw county. To be
more clear and explicit, wo firmly
believe ihat with the abolition of
^ho county dispensary system,
we will inaugurate a system of
lawlessness, crime and general
disorder that will cause a shud
der from every good man or
>voman throughout the length
and breadth of our present law
ful community.

Senator Townsend, of Union County,
Writes Senator Hough as to Con
ditions in His County Since Dis
pensary was voted out.
Union, S. C., June 14th, If 07,
Hon. W. R. HOUGH,
Camden, S. O.
Dear Sir :
Your letter of the 10th received, and in reply will say,
that the liquor question, as far as my county is concerned, has
received my closest study.
I was a State Dispensary man, but on account of the mode of
operation, we held an election in my county nearly one and oiio*
half years ago. and by a vote of about T> or C? to 1, we voted it
out. The vote was by no means a repudiation of the system. It
was simply and purely a rebuice to the mode of operation.
Since that time, wo have had wiiat is called prohibition. I have
watched t he result with an eye single to t he best interest of my
people, and that result has been, that our taxes, county and town,
have both reached the enormous levy of (?()) t wenty mills each,
making 10 mills or 1 per cent, on our property. In town -blind
tigers flourish, upon every hill top, in every valley, and I am sorry
to say, upon almost every street of our beautiful little city.
In consequence of this direful slate of affairs, the Mayor of
the town and myself went to work and got up a petition to call an
election on the question about the middle of next, month, and \
feel free to say that my county, which, :i>; I have already said,
voted out, the Dispensary about one ,\ear and a half ago by a ma
jority of .r> or 0 to 1, will, in the coming election reverse itself oy
a vote of 3 or 1 to 1.
The true cause, as I am fully convinced is, the utter failure of
Prohibition to prohibit.
Our negro labor has been so demoralized by farm hands going
into the liquor business, that some of the farms are nearly de?
pie ted.
Yours truly,
liliN i\ TOWNSEND,
Senator for Union County.
