School Breaking.
The commencement exercises
of the Blaney school were held
at Blaney last Saturday. They
are said to have been very in
teresting, aud reflected marked
credit upon tho popular teacher
of the school, Mr. T. M. Mc
Caskill as well as the pupils. A
barbecued dinner iu connection
with the affair added more in
terest and pleasure to the oc
casion. We regret very much
that we could not avail ourself
of a cordial invitation to attend.

Redd & Bedwell bought of
Capt. Jack Daniel and Lem Mot
low, of Lynchburg, 240 export
steers for future delivery. Last
Friday 114 of the Jot were
brought to FayetteVillo and
shipped the following day. This
lot weighed 129,755 pounds and
brought $5,001.75. This is a
class of stock that is too good
even for our big packing houses
to slaughter and is exported for
the royalty and nobility to fat

Marriage.
We take pleasure in recording
the marriage about two weeks
ago of Mr. J. R. Coats and Miss
Almetta Cautlien. The happy
event took place at the Metho
dist parsonage at Heath Springs,
Rev. Hudson officiating.
The couple will make their
future home at or near Ker
shaw, tlio old residence of the
groom.
We very heartily congratulate
them, and take the occasion to

tho county may be found on fac
tory hill. There are two of them.
The other night they were sit
ting on the porch of a resi
dence occupied by one of them.
Seeing a bright light just east
ward of the house, they raised
the alarm of fire, and started on
a run to render assistance.
Having ran until out of breath,
they stopped to blow, when sud
denly the rising moon stared
them in tho face. That was
enough, so they turned their

Jndge Brawley's decision on
the contract labor law reads like
the arguments of some of these
prohibition preachers and toot
ers. It sounds well, but has
nothing in the way of argument
to back it up.

has any reply to make to our
remarks under that head, we
want them to use logic and com
mon sense, and not silly senti
meut. It is an easy matter to
talk nonsense. We indulge in it
ourself occasionally, but only
when the moon is wrong.
School ' Closing.
The closing exercises of the
Camden Graded Schools will be
held at the Opera House today,
begiuing at 10:30 a. m.
The usual interesting exercises
of the Timrod society will be
conducted on tomorrow night,
the 31st. An admission fee of
35 cents for adults, and 20 cents
lor pupils and others under 14
years of age will be charged.
Reserved seats can be obtained
from Dr. F. Leslie Zeuip. The
proceeds from this entertain
ment will be applied to the pur
chase of books for the school
library, and to the furnishing of
the auditorium at the Qrammar
school.
Our space does not permit of
the publication of the program
in full, which however, we guess
can be obtained from the other
local papers.

The Colutnbia correspondent
of the News & Courier of last
week speaking of Kershaw
County says: "It is said that
there is little donbt that the elec
tion (soon to be held) will go
against the sale of whiskey, and
this huS/beeu learned from men iu
Kershaw who were the most ac
tive heretofore in the attempt to
S reserve the State Dispensary
ystem; it appears too tliat in
Kershaw as in other counties of
the State the old State Ditpcntary
faction have now turned prohibi
tionists and will assist the old
line prohibitionists to close the
County Dispensaries. 1
The source of Information, or
who those "most active men
heretofore" were, does not con
cern us, except to suggest won
derment at such sudden changes
of position upon a public ques
tion which for twelve years past
has been the leading issue of
every political campaign both in
county and State. Considering
therefore the prolonged agita
tion and discussion of the liquor
question through all these years
and the ample time afforded to
reach settled conclusions upon
the matter, it's hard indeed to
understand how any considera*
ble number of dispensary advo
cates - should become so dis
gruntled and disturbed in their
views (just since the August
Primary) as to join forces, and
assist and vote for prohibition in
the coming election. Such is
politics. As an old adherent to
the dispensary system, (run le
gally and honestly by State or
County) we still cling to the "old
saw" it's the best solution of the
liquor question ? and we still
cling to that other "old saw"
(with the present National Li
quor laws existing) "that Pro
hibition never has, and never
will prohibit the selling, buying
and drinking of liquor." We
hud sincerely hoped that until
another campaign year, at least,
that the whiskey question was
done with in Kershaw county,
and it is unfortunate and unwise
to our mind that in an off year
it should again be revived to
disturb public repose. How
ever as the issue seems joined
and must be decided ? we sub
mit Mr. Editor that if the au
thority is vested in the county
Democratic Executive Commit
tee, that it should act at once
and appoint three meetings ? say
one at liethune, Westville and
' Camden so that the people may
have the opportunity of hearing
the question freely And openly
discussed ? it's a public matter
of such vital importance, to our
schools, our rouds $nd to every
citizen of tb$j| county ^ that the
largest vote possible should .be
brought out.
We feel assured that the meet
ings suggested would draw the
people, and arouse interest and
that there would be on such oc
casiou no lack of defenders for
either side of the issue.
We would endorse most hearti
ly the letter of the Rev. Mr. Gor
don published in your last issue.

Death.
It is with a feeling of extreme
saduess that we chronicle the
death of Mr. A. Goodwin Jones
of Liberty Hill. He died at his
home on Monday, the 20th inst.,
typhoid fever being the immedi
ate cause of his untimely demise
although we are informed tnat
that fell disease, consumption,
also contributed towards a con
sumation which all who knew
the deceased most profoundly
regret.
Figures of Southern Factories.
The figures of this census
show that between 1900 and 1904
the factory capital of the South
increased from $908,400,607 to
$1,597,680,872, a gain of $029,
170,205, equal to 64.9 per cent.
In the rest of the country the ad
vance for the same period was
from $8,010,858,953 to $11,088,.
G28;801, a gain of $3,078,270,208,
equal to 38.4 yer cent. The same
figures show that the value of
factory products increased from
$1,223,319,051 to $1,787,969,824,
a gain of $548,280,806, or 44 per
cent, in the South, while in the
rest of the country the gain was
from $10,171,875,003 to $130, 014,
170,702, or a gaiu of 27.9 per
cent. As in the ligures showing
the gain in manufacturing capi
tal add products between 1880
anc 1900 the South made the
largest percentage of, increase,
so these figures showing the
factory growth between 1900 and
1904 the South again shows a
very large per csntage of gain iu
advance of the per centage for
the whole country. Calculating
upon the original basis of 1900
by the measure of ihe advance
shown in the five years, it may
be safely estimated that by the
end of 1900 the capital invested
in Southern manufactures had
increased at least to $2,000,000,
000, and the value of the pro
ducts had approached $2,500,
