The Lyttleton street Metho dist church was the scene of a more than ordinarily pleasant occasion oir Wednesday uight, the 10th iust., the occasion be ing the marriage of Mr. John T. Nettles and Miss Mary De Lioache. The church was beau tifully decorated, the music as rendered by Mrs. C. C. Herbert, liquid and soft "as a zephyr o'er the surface of a woodland brook." The groom was handsome and composed, though pale. The bride a picture of radiant loveli ness attired in robes of angelic whiteness. A large concourse of friends and relative^ of the high contracting parties wit uessed the ceremony which was most impressively performed by Rev. C. C. Herbett, the pastor of the bride. The reception at the residence of the bride's mother was held from 10 to 12 o'clock. Refresh ments were served, after which the guests enjoyed some very tine music by Mr. Hughes of the College for women, of Columbia, pianist, and Mr. Goodman of the Kirk wood orchestra, celloist. Mr. and Mrs. Nettles will spend a poi'tion of the honey moon (which we nope will last while life cudures) iu Florida, They will be at home to their friends after the 24th iust., at their home on Lyttleton street. Mr. Klislia Hall I>rops Dead. Spec in I to Tli?* State. Bethune, April 14- ? Mr. Elisha W. Hall, one of the wealthiest farmeas ot this section, died sud denly Saturday morning while on his way to Lucknow in a buggy. He was rideud along with his nephew, when he fell back in the buggy dead. Mr. Hall was unmarried and was about 63 years of age. It is quite a coincidence that his twin brother, Mr. Elijah VV. Hall died very suddenly about two yeais ago. Both these men lived to gether all their lives, looked alike, dressed alike and talked in the same tone of voice. They both died with heart diseasd, doth died on Saturday. The funeral services were con ducted today at Sandy Grove M. E. Church by the Masons. The deceased was well known in this com in unity. He was a good man and a quiet, unassum ing citizen. We extend sympa thy to the relatives. Polo. The three games of polo last week on the held of the Camden Polo Club between Camden and New Orleans were all won Ov the Camden team, the first on i Monday by a score of 2} to 1 ; ! the second ot: Wednesday, 9} to! 3; and the last on Friday, 10 to 8. The New Orleans team are game fighters, but were out played and out-pouial. They were royally entertained while here, and left we believe with nothing but pleasant impres s/ions of the place and the peo ple. The games were largely at tended, visitors from all the adjoining towns and cities turn ing out in force. By this series of victories the Camden Polo team is justly entitled to the claim of being the best in the State, if not in the South. Tlianks Uxtcnded. We are indebted to Col. R. W. Hunt, Division Passenger Agent of the Southern Railway for copies of addresses by President VV. \Y. Kin ley of that system be fore the Commercial Club of Bir mingham, Ala., on March 21st, and to employees of the road at Spencer, N.C.. on March 23rd. .Also the reply by the .same gentleman to t lie toast, "North) Carolina ami its relationsMo the I Railroad Problem," at a banquet ? of the Merchants and Manufac turers Club or Greensboro, N. i C . on April 3rd. Wo 'enjoyed I these addresses very much, and I may remark that however much or little of it railroad man Presi dent Finley is, he certainly possesses a tremendous vocabu lary of words and is a master in the art of stringing them to gel her. Dr. P. H. Mell ofClemson Col lege also has our thaiiKs for copy of the pamphlet "The Clem sou Agricultural College Ex tension Work." This is a very interesting work, and is devoted to a treatise of disease carrying | insects by Prof. ('has. K. Chain i bless. Sale of ilic Baptist Church* The Baptist church property has been sold to Mr. J. K. Lang at a pr'.ce upon which we con gratulate the purchaser. Two thousand dollars for property of the description of that sold looks to us on the surface to be a half gift. However, the church will not be out much as the new site I selected will cost them only [^250 mrtre. True, the new site lis higher up town, being situated on the north-west corner of Main street and LaFuyette ave nue, and the majority of the I members of the church don't mind- climbing hills to #et to j their place of worship, so it may be that all is well, and will end | well. Early Closing. ? The early closing season is now on, but our young men and boy clerics don't seem to know what to do witli their hours of liberty. There are no league ball games to interest them. Polo is a back number. The pool, rink and bowling rooms have no at tractions for many, so most of them are forloru. We would suggest that our garden as well as many others needs working because of the impossibility of securing a colored gardner, nu meious little repairs are needed on a number of fences we might mention, while Col. A. D. Ken nedy lias a full line of fishing tackle, for the pleasant and suc cessful use of which you may secure the bait from Dr. Wat kins. There isn't a bit of ex cuse for a dull summer- for our clerks if they will make use of the opportunities open to them. lXspcitsnry Purchases. The first quarterly purchases of whisky, &c., by our local board have not yet been com pleted. We will endeavor to give you full information in our next issue. A number of firms had their bids thrown out be cause of failure to comply with the terms of the law relating to bids. Silnmte Toar llowol* With Citariirrt*.
