Let? was duly observed by the peo ple of our city and county at the Opera House on last Saturday ? The exercises attending the oc casion were witnessed by a lar?re audience. After the opening prayer by Rev. T. M. McCon liell, ?'Tenting on the Old Camp * Ground" was very effectively rendered bv a selected choir lie v. C. C. Herbert then made a few introductory remarks, which were followed by the singing of the hymn, "How firm a Founda-, tiou." The ltev. W. B. Gordon then came forward, and delivered an eloquent address on the life v of Lee, sketching in briof but moving terms* the grand personal character of the man whom the world delights to honor, and laying considerable stress upon his great military career. Clyburn und family have returned to Camden to live after a residence of several years at Kershaw. We are pleased to welcome thein back. ? General H. J. Munu of De Kalb paid us one of his periodi cal visits last week. He hus ex tensive timber interests uear the thriving city of DeKalb that keep him a busy man. ? Capt. John Hamel of the Era at Kershaw paid us a pop call on Friday 011 his return from Suuiter to his home after a three day's trip required to do a one hour stroke of business. ? Mr. Benj. Barnes, formerly of this city, but now of Rock Hill, spent last Saturday with us. Ben is a haudsome fellow, and it is perhaps a good thing that he did not have time to stay longer, or he might have made some of our boys look like thirty cents to the girls. Death ot* Senator lluy. The community was shocked last Thursday morning to learn of the suddeu death on the previ ous night of Senator J. T. Hay, which sad event occurred at his hoine between 10 and 11 o'clock. Lie was found in his office on Weduesday evening, unconscious from an attack of heart failure, was removed to his home, and we are informed, died without regaining consciousness. Colo nel Hay was a prominent citizen in county and state political circles, a sound lawyer, civil busiuess being a specialty with hi in during recent years. He was also a good husband and father, and leaves a widow and a number of childreu to mourn their loss, to whom our sympa thy is extended. The funeral services were con ducted by Rev. T. M. McCon nell, the Presbyterian minister on Thursday evening, and the remains interred m the family plot in the Quaker cemetary. Township 8. 8. Practical investigations ui>on the disuses of the cotton plant, in South Carolina have been started at the South Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station auii these investigations can be materially aided by the co operation of the cotton growers in the State. During the com ing season specimens of dis eased cotton plants are earnest ly solicited from growers who will seud with the specimens the following information: 1. When planted? 2. When were diseased plants first observed? ii. Do you find lice or rod spiders 011 tlio under side of the leaves of tlio plants which up- j pear diseased and when were they first observed? 4. What kind of fertilizer was used (Formula); when applied; how; and now much per acre? 5. Do you find the boll worm doing much damage? When did it first appear? What crops were grown on the same land the three pro ceeding years? 7. Is the soil red clay, yellow clay, pipe clay or a sandy clay; loam, sandy loam, or chiefly sand; if black soil, bottom land or upland? 8. Has the weather boon dry or rainy and is the crop grow ing vigorously or is it un healthy? 9. Has the particular trouble reported been observed in pre vious years and are the affected areas in circular or irregular patches, or is it scattered here land there over the field? Another railroad wreck, tins time on the Coast Line with fatal results as usual, the engineer being killed and live others more or less seriously iujured. This wreck occurred ait Yemassee junction near Charleston. When will a partial stop be put to this sort of thing? Senator Tillman attempted to play funny at the expense of his fellow senators on Monday, but was glad to stand from under by apologising to the senate, and promising not to do so any more.
