judgment, we have fallen upon
evil times. Our peoplo seem to
have become thoroughly inocu

cialism. If we are right iu this
opipion, the very life of our ex
istence as the nation founded by
?oufs fathers, has been sapped,
for patriotism has died within
us, and it is only a question of a
iovt. years before we come under
the rule of a despot, a dictator
ov a king.
CO I'TON.
The present condition of the
cotton market furnishes an in
te resting study. Why is cotton
so Jow iu price? Why is it sell
ing on the border of 10 cents?
Is it because of the lurge crop
thai lias been made? No. No
1 a i'ge crop has been in ad e. T 1 1 e re
was practically no surplus left
over from the crop of last year.
The actual demand for it is as
active now as has prevailed in
former years with the added fact
that the consumption of it by
.our own people has largely in
creased. We do not now have
to depend upou Liverpool or
Manchester to tlx the price of it,
yet, a lot of people still hung on
to that un liquated idea. This
class is firmly convinced that if
Liverpool or Manchester wont
pay more than so and so for cot
ftou, we are compiled to accept
what they will pay.
This is a fMlacy, pure and
simple. The cure for it lies in
our own people. Let our inonied
men, our cotton operators say to
these European fellows, "pay
.us our price for cotton, or you
xlon t get it/' then shut them
out, and see how quickly con
ditions will cbauge.

Jt is, that so many of our own
cotton operators are interested
jn the Luverjjool and Manchester
exchanges. As all kuow, selfish
ness is the mainspring of human
action, and as loug as American
cottou operators are financially
connected with foreign ex
change*, just so long will the
cotton producer be at the mercy
of a i'lusa of sharks,
Tbe remedy.? Kill out these'
exchangee. It is gambling, m ire
ami simple, and could be^iped
out withia tweuty-f^j^r hours if
our officials ware^tfonest and con
scientious. Tl it be done? No,

fic. Before this remedy is ap
plied, we must have a Hearst as
Governor of New York, where
the principal deviltry is pulled
off- We must have a Bryan
or a man of equal force and
convictions in the White House,
whose Attorney General is un
compromisiug in his opposi
tion to infringements of law.
Then we will have them. Until
then, farmers, plow ou. You
can meet and resulute as much
as you please, but you are not
in it as long as the cotton game
sters have allied with them the
Natioual House of Represen
tatives, the Senate, and the ju
dicial department of the Natioual
government.

No matter if you like the news
paper man or if lie lilces you, :f
lie is true to his profession and
publishes a paper for the people
he allows no personal matter or
petty spiles to interfere with his
news gathering.
He may meet you as a stran
ger, yet along with his best
friends, chronicles your success
land sorrows wherever you may
be, and those who would other
wise forget you are ever and
anon reminded of your existanee
by an item in your home paper.
Others may deceive aud defraud
you, but your home paper never
forgets you.
Possibly you do not deserve
decent treatment by the paper,
but you get it just the same, and
it it should at any time say
things to cause your fur to turn
the wrong way, study a moment
and see if it has not at various
times said mauy nice things for
which you failed to give it credit.

Hermitage Mill Notes. I
Dear. Editor: Wo have just
received your paper, and have
read and read, and re*rtad till
our eyes ache. What a blessing
a good paper is. Half the world
it appears does not know, or ap
preciate or care about the good
there is in a good newspaper.
We know some people who will
subscribe for a paper, and then
don't feel enough interest logo
to the oftice for it. As for us, we
want to know what is going
011, and where to buy the
cheapest goods anyway.
Work in the mill was very dull
during carnival week. Moie
hands played "hooky" than a
few. The management is put
ting down more machinery, and
with cold weather here, the mill
will run better.
We have had such good reli
gious meetings here. Everyone
seemed to enjoy theiu. There
is a good deal of sickuess from
colds. We sympathise with Mrs.
lilackwell whose little boy has
been down so long with his foot
The trouble was something 1 i e
white swelling. His leg was
amputated, and he is now doing
very well, Dr. C'lyburu is Mrs.
Black well's physician. He is
faithful in his duty. God bless
him, we factory people, or the
larger half of us give him the
praise.
I Mrs. Worth Parker, who has
been sick with fever is much
better.
Mr. Editor, we agree with you
in wanting more factories here.
What a good thing it would be
to have even a canning factory.
The people could get good prices
for their fruit and /egctables.
It would create more jobs, and
more money would be in circu
lation.
M'ss Dessie Knowels has been
right sick for the past week.
Well, there is nothing more of
interest here. We would like to
hear the uevvs from all parts. It
will make us bright iustead of
dull, and we would say to all
who can read, there is a good
education in a newspaper wheth
er you know it or not. You can
through the reading of them,
tell the news to others iustead
of having to ask for it for your
self, while the money that is
thrown away foolishly by many,
will pay for two or three good
papers.

tion of "The Clunsman". in this
city last week, and tliueats cir
culated by whites that a Ku Klux
Klan was being organized to
drive negroes from the commu
nity, the blacks have formed
themselves into u band of white
caps and already have started a
series of depredations on the
whiles. News has reached here
from Rear Crejsk, in Lincoln
county, that ??Bud" Godbold, a
young while farmer, was tired
u pou by negro whitecaps while
riding through a lonely stretch
of woods. His horse was killed,
but Godbold escaped. Accord
ing to Godbold's story, a white
mail riding a 100 yards behind
hiin was simultaneously attacked
by the blacks. Officers have
gone to t lie scene of the ambusli.
The story circulated that whites
would form a Ku Kluv Klan was
done as a joke, it is asserted,
out the blacks took the jokers at
their word. The excitement
here is iutense.

A Curious Tomb.
j The most curious tomb in Eng
land is that of Lady Anne Grim
ston, daughter of the Earl of
Thanet, who died nearly two
centuries ago and was buried in
Tew in churchyard. Upon her

she would die. "It is as likely
