while on their way to work load
|ing lumber near DeKalb, two
negroes, Robert Salmoud and
John Clay, became engaged in
an altercation which resulted in
Clav being shot in the left side
by Salmoud perhaps fatally, with
a shot guu. From the accounts
which have reached us of the
affair, Salmoud was Justified in
the shooting as Clay was ad
vancing oo Ida; with a billet of
wood after being repeatedly
warned off.

Miss Gordon Anderson died lit
her residence on Fair street on
Friday, Oct. 26th.'
The deceased was 74 years of
age and had been infirm in
health for several years.
She was a most estimable
lady, and our regrets are mingled
wUh those of distressed rela
tives.
The funeral services were
conducted at the hous* at 4
o'clock p. m.t Oct., 27th and the
remains Interred in the Quaker
cemetary.
Died 011 the evening of Oct.
29tht at the hoioeof his father,
Mr. J. C. Hilton, near DeKalb,
Mr. Archie N. Hilton. The de
ceased was a young man of mucti
promise, a clever, good boy,
and his parents and other rela
tives have our full sympathy in
??heir loss. Typhoid fever was
the disease to which he suc
combed.
At the setting of the sun, the
passing of the day, on last Satur
day evening, the immortal spirit
of James M. LeGraud quitted its
tortured earthly body and took
its (light into the eternal realm
of rest, a realm where sorrow
and suffering is uot, aud where
peace eternal reigus.
Mr. LeGrand was long past
the meridian of life, was a gal
lant. Confederate soldier, a use
ful citizen, a congenial comrade
and a staunch friend to those he
liked. Iu his death we feel a
keen sense of personal loss as
we hud beeu more or less inti
mately associated * together for
many years. ' Our grief is teiu
(tered by the belief that lie is
now with God. He doetli all
things well, and it is not for us
to repine, or to iudplge in ex
hibitions of unseemly sorrow
over His dispensations.
. The funeral services of our de
ceased friend werife conducted at
the house by R?*v. C. C. Herbert
on Sunday evening,, and the re
maiiis interred' in the. Quaker
cemetary.
