We are essentially an advocate
4 ' or law and order. We believe
entirely in the general principle
that the law should be upheld,
5 ?md that all violaters of the law
should be punished under the
^ provisions of the law violated in
the exteut of the law to which
k the crime applies. This opinion
is we believe, shared by eveiy
' good citizen.
There is one crime however
f at which we come to the parting
?of the ways between human law
and the higher law* That crime
is rape. . No liUaiati law, in our
judgment, in the light of modern
civilization has been devised that]
can be sufficient and quick to
punish a crime of that kind. No
man who 1* imbued with the
* proper, feeling of self respect
will submit to the indignity of
having any female member of
Iiis family getting up in the wit
ness box, and relating to a gap
ing crowd the injuries to which
?she lias beeu subjected.
We believe fully in the sum
Jtiary punishment of ravishers
of female virtue, the offendor bo
? ing fully idealities, but we draw
the line at thai oiliense. There
is sufficient law already on our
statute books to insure adequate
punishment to all other classes
of offenders, so a resort to lynch
law 111 those cases is notoniy
wrong in principle, but wrong
in practice. That mode of pun
islimcvt when resorted to for
?any other offense than rape, lie
4jets a disregard for law in any
form, and will inevitably result
in a state of anarchy worse than
now prevails in Itussia.
In former issues we have call
ad attention to this matter of

lynching, and talren pratetically
the same stand. The fact how
ever that within a week we have
had three lynching bees impels
?s to warn the people generally
r.hat while v;o do net condemn
?the prompt stringing up of a
rapist, we do not uphold mob
law for the punishment of any
other crime. True, the law's
?delays are trying upon the nerves
In many instances. Kecognized
offenders against the law often
.?o unpunished because of tech
nicalities in the law, but above

have its protection 111 a major
number of instances. Simply
observe the law, and everyone
May rest satisfied that he will be
protected in life, liberty, purse
and the pursuit of hapiness.
Active Campaign of lOOd
Closed.
It was not our pleasure to at
tend the meeting of candidates
held at Kirkloy's Store on
Wednesday, owing to pressing
busiuess at our office. We under
stand that it was well attended,
apd that the candidates gave the
audienco the usual spiel. We
<1 id attend the meeting at West
vi lie, and considered our time
well spent, as we met many old
friends there whom we had not
seen in many months, and talked
to the largest crowd that the
- candidates had faced up to that
time. . The very pleasaniest fea
ture of this meeting was the
"presence of so many ladies. We
had a few at Blaney and Be
tliune, but the lady folk aroiind
V/ostville turned out in full forco
and their presence seemed to in
spire all the candidates to do
their best 111 the line of speech
tnnking. A candidate who hasn't
the ludies on his side is in a bad
way us a rule. A number of

Mr. T. J. Kiriclatid led for the
representatives. He was clear
cuid emphatic in his denouncia
ti m of the dispensary system in
any form as previously reported.
Made a good speech on other
subjects. Ho was followed by
Mr. J). M. Bethuue who made
his usual speech in sections, rain
intermitting. Mr. Schrock made
;i brand nev; one as he had inis
? ?>d the typewritten copy he
used for' reference in former
speeches. He spoke for a bet
ter school system, criticized the
course* of study at the last sura*
uier school, the poetry feature
being condemned. Was warm
in his denunciation of the slate
dispensary system, and advo
cated county dispensaries as the
best present solution of the
whiskey question. Mr. li'tchards
followed with a strong appeal
for the retention of the state dis
pensary system. Denied Mr.
Schrock's charge that at Be
thuue he had advised the voters
to vote for no candidate who did
| not advocate the system. Is

Lang ley concluded for the repre
sentatives in an iuiraitable
speech.
The meeting was concluded by
addresses from Messrs. Hough
and Olyburn, candidates for the
senate. We missed these as we
had to run to catch the train.
The candidates were extended
a special invitation to attend a
picnic at Vaughan's Mill on Fri
day which was accepted by quite
a number. Much to our disap
pointment sickness prevented
our attendance. We learn that
it was a pleasant occasion.

The closing meeting of the
campaign was largely attended,
and was pleasant in all respects.
It was held in the court house,
just about as hot a place as any
one may exnect to get into until
he dies. We made our speech
as did all the other candidates,
and think we voice the uuani
mous smitiment of all that it is
'the most atrocious place in which
to make the voice heard that has
ever been devised. We learn that
the miserable shack cost the
county in the neighborhood of
$42,000, and for our part, wo are
willing to stand our share of
$10,000 more taxation to be ex
}>ended in remodeling it so that
its acoustic properties may be
improved.
Nothing new was developed
at this meeting. Everv candi
date received the applause that
was due hint and no more. The
people seemed to be there for
the purpose of gaining informa
tion, and we hope they got it.
It was intended that a meeting
ait the new cotton factory would
be announced to be held that
night, but through some over
sight it was not. Rain, late that
evening deterred several of the
candidates from attending, in
cluding ourselt, but the meetiug
was held alf the same, ard it
was said to hnve been a very en
joyable occasion.
The very last meeting was
held at the old factory on Mod
day night. A number of tho
candidates were absent, butthoso
who were fortunate enough to
got there were, we feel assured
not disappointed in #the results
obtained.
