On Tuesday, as workmen were
excavating for the foundation of
Mr. Nicola's cottage at Knights
Hill, they uncovered the skele* i
(on of a man (or woman) at a
depth of about two and a half
feet. It hud evidently beeu j
buried a very loug time as no
thing remained of it but the
?kull, shoulder and hip bones.
It is }>erhaps the remains of
either "a continental or British
soldier who died or was killed
during the war of the revolution.
John Smith, one of the workmen
on the cottage, offered us a por

Scholastic ami Litcrury.
The commencement exercises
of the Camden Graded School
came off on last Thursday as pre
viously noted, and were highly
interesting throughout, the
graduates acquittiug themselves
with great credit. To the dis
appointment of all, Rev. John
Kershaw, who was to deliver the
annual address, was not able to
keep the engagement. The
speech he had prepared for the
occasion was read by Rev. W. B.
Gordon in a very entertaining
manner.
The unusual feature of the oc
casion was the presentation by
Prof. R. M. Kennedy of a loving
cup to Mrs. M. A. Shannon, who,
with this session, severs a con
tinuous term of thirty-three
years of service in the schools
of Camdeu. This cup was pre
sen ted by Prof. Kennedy in bo
half of the pupils, teachers and
trustees of the Camden Graded
School.
The first honor graduates are
Master Creightou Williams and
Miss Lizzie Tranthaui, the latter)
being awarded the scholarship
medal. The diplomas to the
twelve graduates were delivered
by Hon. T. J. Kirlclaud, chair
man of the board of trustees.
Rev. C. C. Herbert presented the
.composition modal to Miss Nan
Tranthaui. This closed a very
enjoyable occosion.
On Friday night, the enter
tainment by the Timrod Literary
Society was given before a tre
mendous audiance all of whom
seemed to enjoy the music, de
bates, songs, reading and decla
mations to which they were
treated. We regret, that our re
port of the proceedings are
second liand, our old enemy,
rheumatism, preventing us from
attending.
The piano music by Miss Mil
dred Hull, was declared by com
petent juiges to be beyond criti
cism. The debate on "Compul
sory Education" was a capital
thing, Master Creighton Wil
liams carrying otT the debater's
medal. Misses Claudia Zemp
and Bertie Lenoir were the hap
py recipients of the medals for
reading and declamation respec
tively. The entertainment was
concluded with "Songs of the
Nations," with tableau illustra
1 lions.
