Last Cargo of African Slaves.

"The very last vessel to bring
a cargo of African slaves into
this country landed -m the coast
of Georgia in I860,'* said Col.
William Youngblood of Atlanta.
"Tbe vessel whose name I do
not recall, was operated by two
Southern men, Corrie and La
mar. I think Corrie 'was from
Charleston and his partner was
from Savannah, and a member
of the celebrated Lamar family.
They brougnt over between five
and six hundred negros from
the shores of Africa, and pro
ceeded up the Savannah river
to Augusta before attempting to
get rid of the slaves. There
was lively bidding for the blacks
by the planters of Georgia and
South Carolina, and they sold
like hot cakes at prices rauging
from $3oo to $800. Gen. Bear
ing, a prominent citizen of Edge
field county, S. C., bought twen
ty of them.
'"At that time I was goiug to
school in South Carolina, and
happened to pay a visit to the
' home of Mrs*. Tillman, the raoth
; er of the present United States
Senator from that State, who
also lived is that county. It
seems that Mrs. Tillman had
been a purchaser at the sale of
Corrie and Lamar, and I have
a distinct recollection of being
- shown one of the young Sene*
garabians that she had bought of

night, and when spoken to could
only grin and gesticulate. He
had not learned a word, of Eng
lish."
