We had occasion to walk into
the Mammoth Store of Mr. M.
Baum last Saturday eveuing,
and were absolutely amazed
at the siseof the crowd of buyers
we found there, th rouging every
counter, and were still more as
touished when iufo:mcd that
that had been the conditiou of
things all day. This incident
alone is a complete demonstra

Polo.
A tremendous crowd, various
ly esti mated at 800 to l,ooo wit
nessed the match game of Polo
ou Monday evening between the
crack team of Orlando Fla.t and
our home team. A special train
from Columbia brought over
about 2oo, while a caravan of au
tomobiles from Sumter brought
in perhaps a hundred more.
Other towns furnished their
quota of visitors, and the sceue
was a lively one.
The game was a dashing one
throughout, but it was soon seen
that Orlando was out classed,
the game being all Camden's
way. Prom detailed reports of
it, it would seem that every mem
ber of the Camden term distin
guished himself by one or more
brilliant plays, while Capt.
Gwynne of the Orlandos re
ceived favorable mention, he
saving his team from a complete
shut out by making one goal.
Another game was played yester
day evening, but as we go to
press promptly at 12 o'clock
every Wednesday, we cnnnot
give you the result. The visi
tors are the recipients of many
courtesies at the hands of our
people, but that is Camden's
way.

and favorably known here.
Mr. Scott Brown, known all
over the State as a hotel man
from his infancy, and a former
resident of Greensboro, is spend
ing the day here with his bro
ther,' Mr. A. E. Brown. Mr.
Brown is making arrangements
to re-build his wiutef hotel at
Camden, S. C., which was burned

Tlie Court House Yard.
What's the matter with the
court house yard? Prom its ap
pearance as cotnpttred with the
outside appearance of the house,
we have a $4o,ooo court house,
and a ten cent yard. To a man
up a tree it woold seem that
about as good work as the chain
gang could be put to for about ?
week is cleaning out the yard,
and cleaning the court house
itself, the cleaning to include the
washing of the windows. One
of the gang too,* might be fur
nished a saw, and made to dub
off those sharp corners of the
judge's rostrum. Unless that is
done somebody is going to gel
shinned sure, it may be, the
judge himself.

for amounts of $50 and over, the
proceeds from which source
goes to the support of Confed
erate pensioners who shall have
reached the age of 05 years.

Camiol Serve Pardon Board.
Mr. Wilson G. Harvey, of
Charleston, has notified the
governor that lie could not serve
on the board of pardons upon
which he was recently appoint
ed. Mr. Harvey is an alderman
in the city of Charleston and un
der the constitution cannot hold
two offices. The governor has
not selected Mr. Harvey's suc
cessor.
If that Hepburn bill should
get through the senate through
Tillman's activity, we can see a
broad expanse of gritting teeth
at the white house before "Theo
dore Roosevelt' ' is signed to it.
