Atrocious Murder and Assault.
R. A. McDowell, one of Our Best
Citizens, Done to Death by
an Assassin, and his Com
panion, R. W. Porter, Mur
derously Assaulted. ,
On the night of the 3rd, inst.,
between the hours of 9 and 10
o*clock, Mr. R. A. McDowell, a
merchant of our city, closed his
place of business, and started
towards his home on DeKalb
street, accompanied by Mr. R.
\V. Porter, a citizen of West
YVateree, and a juror also iu the
Gillis-Whi taker case. As they
were passing along the side
walk of Hampton Park, on De
Kalb street, In its deepest
shadow, they were approached
from behind by some party un
known, and Mr. McDowell was
struck a fearful blow just back of
the right eur, felling him to the
ground. Mr. Porter, hearing
the blow, turned quickly, and
was felled by another territic
blow which opened his head, and
rendered him unconscious for a
time. The murderer then went
through the pockets of his'two
victims, securing all their valu
ables aud mouey, and made his
escape. The first intimaliou of
the crime was discovered when
Mrs. McDowell, the wife of one
of the victims sent her little step
son out to see what was detain
ing his father. The little fel
low, on his way to the store,
stumbled oven his dyiug form.
He gave the alarm, and assis
tance was quickly on the scene.
Among those who resi>onded to
the call was Dr. A. W. Burnet.
Mr. McDowell was alive when
he (Dr. Uurnet) reached him, but
died almost immediately after
ward. It seems that Mr Por
ter had recovered his senses suf
ficiently to regain his feet, and
with the natural instinct, im
planted in all animals, and man
is but an animal, he endeavored
to make his way home. He re
covered his senses early in the
moruing, and found that he was
near the old Wateree bridge,
sorely wounded. He immediate
ly retraced his steps to the city,
and had his wounds attended to
by Dr Duun. At this writing
we have not been able to ascer
tain the extent of his injuries,
but sincerely hope that they will
not prove to be serious.

Tlie grim reaper has again
entered our midst, and removed
from the arena of life one of our
most highly respected citixens,
Mr. S. M. C. Moore.
Mr. Moore was for many years
the trusted and efficient book
keeper of Mr. H. G. Garrison,
respected and liked by all with
whom he came in contact. On
Friday, the 29th nit., while en
gaged in his usual avocations,
he was stricken with paralysis
which rendered him speechless
and helpless. He wus removed
to his home on Hampton avenue, I
and every attention paid to his!
comfort and condition, but all in
vain. A slight rally was no
ticeable on Sunday morning; he
recognizing and speaking to his
family and friends. He gradir
ally sank however, and at 10
o'clock on Tuesday nigl.t. the
ilrd inst., his * immortal spirit
took its Might to the home pre
pared for it in that land of light
beyond the skies.
The old home of the decensed
being at Cheraw, the remains
were taken there and on Thurs
day iuterred in the family burial
ground.
He leaves an invalid wife, to
whom lie was most devoted, a
sister, and one daughter to
whom our sympathies are ex
tended.
Died, at the residence of Mrs.
Carrie Latham, on DeKalb
street, on the early morning of
the 8th inst., Mrs. Holmes,
relict of the late Mr. B. M.
Holmes, long a residant of this
city, The death of Mrs. Holmes
was very sudden, some heart
affection being its cause. She
was an earnest christian, unos
tentatious alw.iys, but true to
her friends, and sincere iu her
faith. lirrn*<i'l in l'ncr.

there is absolutely no clue to the
perpetrator of the most atroci
ous crime that has been com
mitted in uiauy years within our
borders.
The body of the murdered man
.was tenderly conveyed to his
residence, and every attention
given it by numerous frieuds
and relatives.
Latkk: ? Mr. Porter'"s injuries
were found to be serious, his
skull being fractured, aud Dr.
Dunn recommended his immedi
ate removal to a hospital for
treatment. This is a lamenta
ble affair. So far as our know
ledge went the injured muu hud
not an enemy in the world, and
to be strjick down in his old age
by a assassin under cover of dark
ness seems hard.
A jury of inquest on the body
Of Mr. McDowell was empanell
ed on the evening of the 4th,
and after viewing the body, ad
journed to meet at OjiiO a, m. on
the 13th, for the purpose of tak
ing evidence.
The funeral services were held
at three o'clock on Thursday
evening at the Camden Baptist
Church, by the paster, Rev. J.
D. Moore, the spacious edilice
being tilled ulmost to suffocation
with friends and others, who
wished to show their regard and
esteem for a noble- hearted,
christian gentleman.
Robert A. McDowell was one
of nature's uoblemen. Genial
and kindly, upright in all Irs
dealings with his fellow-man, as
true a christian as ever embraced
the faith of the lowly Najjar ine,
a devoted husband, and fond
father, a faithful friend. Iti his
death, our city has lost one of
its best citizens, the Baptist
church one of its strongest, pil
lars, and his family, not only at
home, but the brothers and sis
ters, a wise counsellor and guide.
To the stricken wife and young
son, we extend the deepest sym
pathy, and mingle our tears with
theirs in their loss of loving
husband and lather. He was
our friend too, as well us rela
tive, and we, haviug kuowu him
all our life, bear earnest, and
heartfelt testimony to his no
bility of soul, and the whiteness
of his life.
