Deftr fc>ir: I beg tocall t*>yf>tir attention that I see in the news papers that New York author ities on cotton claim that j*our advising ttie farmers to sell at 10 ceuts caused a break in the market. ? I. am sure the nice resolution introduced by me in our county cottou convention the 3rd inst., expressing our gratitude to you and other officers, both State and national, for the wise and patri otic way in which tl\e Interest ol the entire couutr.y has been served, should show to you that I am not a fault finder, but do congratulate you, myself and the country at large that, with your leadership, we have met and vanquished the foe and set at i liberty their captives and slaves,! the southern people*. May 1 ask, did it ever occur to you that we cannot grow cotton at 10 cents per pound and pay* over 50 cents a day for labor? In your good judgment is not 75 cents to ?1 cheap for a day's work and the man board himself?, At. these prices for labor, cotton cannot be grown for less than 15 to 20 cents per pound. If you remember, so high au thority as A. Britton, president of the New Orleans cotton ex-, change, and Col. Ilobson of Mer ri mac fame ? the latter knowing China, India and the islands of. the seas as you know grand old Georgia ? both declared before the New Orleans cotton conven tion that cotton as an article of clothing to the world is cheap at 20 cents per pouud. Yours Very truly, H. It. Lipscomb. Mu. Jordan's Reply. Atlanta, Ga., July 12, 1005.' Mr. 11. S. Lipscomb, Trough, S.C. Dear Sir: I am today in re ceipt of your favor of the 10th iust., and in reply beg to say. that the article which I wiote emphasizing a minimuu price of 10 cents to be followed by a slow movement of the crop during' the next two months was in ac cordance with a resolution pass ed while the association was in session at Memphis. If we' should make an 11,000,000 bale crop, then 1 do fiot think 12 cents per pound would be a high pricey for cotton If we do not make' over 10,0'-H),0o() bales, then it is rather difficult to say just how' high the price of cotton will go. 1 feel assured from present bud, crop prospects that if the farm ers do not becanVc Tim ul and sell their cotton for future delivery at present prices, they will all receive much higher prices dur ing the fall than obtained at the present time. ? .1 desire to thank you very much' for your kind expressions iu re gard to the work of the assoeia ! lion, and for the resolutions ' which you had Introduced and passed in your county cotton convention on .July 3rd. It is highly important thai the mem bership of the association should now be built up as rapidly as possible in order that we may be able to present a strong and solid front on the first of Sep tember when the new crop begins to move.
