ConirreKMloiml Meeting at Be

We had the pleasure of attend
ing the closing meeting of the
campaign for Cougress which
came off at Bethune on Saturday.
Owing to the fact that the town
and county thereabouts had been
almost washed away on the day
before, there was ouly about
one hundred spectators and au
ditors present, but it was a good
meeting all the same, and while
the speakers disclaimed having
said anything, what they did say
was given close attention. Mr.
Williams presented his cause
yery cleverly, making a capital
S|>eech, into which he injected a
number of matters which he had
omitted < n former occusioues.
Mr. Fiuley also delivered what
we considered his best effort dur

will be )>artially shown in our

The cares and duties tad rt>
spouslbtlitieA of ,life seemed to
rest very lightly on the shoulders
of our two notables, "Sam and
Jake," when they met on last
Saturday in the store of Mr. A.
D. Kennedy, where 8am, despite
the rebuff that he nad received
from Lieutenant Young on the

language used by theLieutenaut
on (he occasion mentioned seem
ed to have found, sound lodge
ment in the abdominal cavity of
our black, colored friend, Bam,
with the result that as long as
cotton keeps up to 10 cts. or bet
ter, A. D. k. gets the trade of
"Sam" and his triends.
On meeting on this occasion,
Jake called Sam off to one side
aud opened the conversation
with: "Sam dis am er funny

Full bnsiness is going to be u
litlie livelier than last year.
Most people tiling it is goink to
be the liveliest we have ever had.
Prosjierity has continued up to
the present aud t here is every
indication that it will continue
thtough the winter. People are
going to buy things more liberal-,
ly tbau ever before. Merchants
with reputations will have little
difficulty iu selling goodsof the
right quality. Those merchants
who have failed to get their rep
utation up to the par point will
have a handicap against which
they will be compelled to work,
but they should^ start early iu
order to conviuce the people of
their deter mi uatton to furnish
that which is satisfactory and at
a price which will be a pleasure
to the buyer as well as a benefit
to the seller. This fall business
is going to require more push
because there is going to be much
competition for it. There are
going to be more attractive
goods, and the energetic mer
chant is going to try to keep all
Ins old friends. The man with
out a reputation is going to try
to sell on the same old plan.
However much each may think
his claim will appeal to the peo
ple, tliure is 110 question but that I
the contest will l>e fierce. The]
results will be disappointing to1
some one, and success will go
with hi in who has the most reason
for that success. The fall adver
tising campaign should start
early and bo intelligently planned
and carried to successful conclu
sion. It is going to take brains,
cash and determination to win
the business desired.?11 ulmont

the following condition:
1. Cession to Japan of the

<J. Cession to Japan of Port

?How was last Saturday for a

?Wo went to Betbtt* on Sat

of good people up there.
?Crops of all kinds all over
the country are very good. Too

?Read the matter contained
in our court house letter in this
issue. It is full of moat. Do not
read our comments on it unless
you want to. /
?If we had only one tenth of
the bruin that is possessed by
those who assert that we have
fought against the building of
a new court house, South Caro
lina would not be one half large
enough to hold it. The purchase
of a Santos DuMont balloon
would become a crying nccossity.
?We refrain by request from
publishing in full the remarks of
the two candidates for Congress
made by them at Bethune. Both
of tliein disclaim having said
anything, so we gueps we will
have to agree with them.
?The Lien Law is said by
inuiiy to be a great immoral in
stitution and the State aud
County Dispensaries to be moral
institution?. The two arc pretty
much on a par according to our
way of tluuking.
?Our announcement columns
are somewhat decimated this
week. Do uot blame us please.
We did not have a thing to do
with tixiug the date of the prim
ary election.
-^We think we stated some
tune buck that we would elect as
-many of those who bad their an
nouncement in The People as we
could, but that no .candidate
could hope to b<? elected who did
not have it. there. This was
perhaps an error of judgement.
?VVe note a magnificent growth
of grass and wetuis on,certain of
our streets, which presents a
beautiful picture to tUe eye, but
does not appeal to the utilitarian.
?We look with envy at the
easy chairs in the Council cham

comfortless rooms of our Fire
Department, and with positive
longing for that culvert in front
of the Camden Hotel.

We congratulate Mm winners,

that the leaders in the tirst. could

uneventful one, and we take this
