"Wo clip thc following from a Cologne
letter of Grace Greenwood to thc New
York Times :
I also made a solitary pilgrimage to
tin- ioiiib of Charlemagne j leaving the
train at Ai.\da-('happcllc, oil our way
from Kr?ssels td Cologne, lt was the
first German town I had laen in formally
vear.-; I knew no German, and had little
French at my command; it seemed an
adventurous tiling todo,hut .accoutered
as I was, I plunged in." As the Don. or
SI tl lister, seemed near. I thought I had
helter walk it than try my lonely luck
with a German cab-driver, but soon got
involved in a labyrinth of narrow street*,
overhung with quaint,sombreo'd 'nouses,
curious mis-shapen edifices, which seemed
to come upon me round every c?rner,-hit I
of the middle ages, and I was obliged to
call in the aid of both church am?state
a priest and a policeman-before 1 could
Ibid the entrance of the oh!, old chapels
designed and erected by Charlemagne for
his own grand burial place nearly a
thousand years ago. Around the chapel
later additions have been built, and t here |
is a lofty modern choir, made almost en- |
ii rel y pf beautiful stabled glass, hutt heso
things had little interest for me. 1 only
felt thal that monarch of monarchs had
stood where 1 was standing, planning
royally for his own sepulture. I only
saw on the marble slab at my feet the
brief great inscription, "(.'aro Magno."
I knew he was not resting beneath that
slab-that it only marked the spot where
once stood his lomb, which "dread
abode" was broken into by Otto III.,
and th" great emperor was found, not
reposing in a collin, but seated in a throne
like chair of white marble, arrayed in
royal robes, crowned, sceptered, anti willi
his familiar pilgrim's pouch at his side.
(lu his knees rested a copy of the gospel's,
and at hand, as though ready to defend
il, was his favorite sword Joi/cuse.
There is something awfully grand in
such an entombment. Ile bad sai there
in silence and i.. night for nearly two ?
hundred years, waiting lor the resurrec
tion, which came all too soon. The fra
grance of rare gums and spiel's used in
bis part tal embalmment must have fainted
in the mold, and colors of rich -ilk and
the sheen of gobi died out in the dark
ness; but it seems to me that tin- sleeping
light of those crown jewels must have
dreamed ?d' the sun and the cast soft
trcmulousglcamsdownoii the open pages
of the word. Ile should have been left
there in state, while at le?st his grand
chapel should endure, but the stone was
rolled away from the sepulchre, not by
angels, but hy hungn relic hunters and
saint-mongers, ami they laid desecrating
and dissecting bands upon ii i m-parted
not only bis raiment, but his skeleton -
took bim to pieces bone hy bone, and
have distributed him about munsters and
monasteries. A dead emperor of Unit
quality was too much for a chapel ol' this
size to have all to itself. It preserves,
however, his skull, the darkened shell of
an extinct star of sovereignty-a gigantic
/ 'bia-the real chair in which lu- sat.
ami which was afterward used at the cor
onation of emperors, and the pa ria ll sar
cophagus in which rested his tired feet
all through tba? two hundred years' sit
ting. This church is marvelously rich in
?date, jewels, chalices, shrines and reliq
uaries of rare and exquisite workmanship,
and in relics, the bare list ot' which appalls
one asan exhibition of human credulity,
superstition and imposition. What an
idea ?d' Christ they have who actually
believe he can be pleased at seeing lu's
people redeemed from olden idolatry,
prostrating themselves before the rod
w' ieh once smote bini, the cord that
bound him. the nail thal pierced bini,
and even the blackened ami shriveled
arni of poor old .Simon-that arin which
bore the tun i I big infant Jesus in the
temple.
A very interesting building js the
Kathhaus, which dates back to l.3f>Sj and
was then built on the site of the old
palace in which Charlemagne was born,
lil the Kaiser Saal, a sombre, low-arelied
hall, thc coronet ion of the emperors
used to take place. No lest than thirty
seven, they told me, had there received
the crown, seated on thc mortuary chair
of Charlemagne, and swearing upon the
sacred relics, a curious and ghastly col
lection-Christ's leathern girdle", the
sponge once wet with vinegar for his (ly
ing li|>s, some blood and btmes ol' fit.
Stephen, some manna front the wilder
ness, that arm of obi Simon, and a hit
of Aaron's rod. There is a grand new
staircase to this hall, and tl ic old one
has fallen into decay and desuetude.
The stone steps of this seemed to me
worn out hy the tramping of many em
perors and their mailed retainers; in
spite of some bright modern frescoes,
giving the glorious incidents in Charle
magne's life, the air of this old galoon
wa.s melancholy and oppressive to me,
lilied with shilling pictures of history
more gloomy than grand-of those me
d?a-vals . monarchs, coming and going,
witli a mighty clang of steel and surg
ing of banners, and * stormy bursts of
music, and taking holy names and aw fid
oaths ripon their lips, now and then one
resolved un thc reign of justice, burning
to do them great, good work for God and
the people, hut for the most part robbers,
usurpers, bigots or imbeciles. When
Albert ol' Hapsburg took thc oath on
those holy relics, Simeon's arm should
have seized Aaron'a rod and smitten him
there in the purple.
