thc almost pure article, found some tSvo

marvelous deposit is fourni to consist al

in Sicily. TIlC principal supplies for the
manufacture of sulphuric acid comes from
there; the deposits contain 85 percent, of

Our western sulphur hill, therefore, is

LO.YC?KVJTY OF SNAII-H.-An English
paper, giving some evidence regarding
the tenacity with which the snail holds
on to life, relates that a lady, having col
lected some with pretty marked shells,
wished to preserve them. She therefore
subjected them to a couple of boiling
wirier baths and left them on a shelf ill a
summer-house to dry. Tin: next morn
ing, to her surprise and dismay, she lound
the snails crawling about the place, and
some of thc hungrier ones feeding upon
thc paste meant to he tt.-ed in Cementing
the shells toortIn-r. The tender-hearted
lady was so distressed ?rt her unwitting
cruelty that she sat down and had a good
cry, (?liding with thc resolve never to al
li inp! snail-boiling again. In 1771 an
irish collector stated before the royal so
ciety that certain white snails that had
been confined i" the'cabinet mr at least
ii ft eon years poked their heads out of
i heir shells and resumed their usual hab
its on being imincrccd in warm water.

VENTILATION.-Ever since ventilation
ivas first talked and written about, it has
>eop. a more or less obscure und uncertain
mbject; a subject on w hich it was easier
LO show what ought to bc than what could
be. Wc have, therefore, the innre satis
faction in calling attention.to a paper by
Dr. Francois de Glum mont, of the Army
Medical School, Netley, which lays down
lefinitc principles of ventilation, and will
.nable any observant person to decide
rhctlier a building is properly ventilated
>r not. The paper in ?niestion-"On the
heory of ventilai ion; au attempt to cs
ablish a positive basis for the calculation
if thc amount of fresh air required foran
nhabited air-space"--was read at n meet
Hg of tin- Royal society, and has been
in bl ?shed in their proceedings, and is tims
vnihlblc to all who desire to make ascot
t.
The basis taken by Dr. Francois dc
'haumout is "thc evidence of thc senses,"
.ut willi "proper care ami precautions.'.
The poison in impure air, he remarks, is
irganic matter, either suspended orin the
m in of vapor; and it is this poison which
mparts to air that disagreeable quality
ommonly described as "close." This
iloseness can be remedied only by dilu
ing the confined air with a quantity of
Vesli air; and to determine this quantity
soncofthesteps in a theory of ventilation,
dion. Observation shows that the'amount
if organic impurity bears a fairly regu
ar proportion to the amount of carbonic
icid developed by thc inhabitants in an
lir-space. This being accepted, andgen
illll diffusion being admitted, we can cas
ie calculate the amount of fresh air rc
pured to bring down the carbonic acid to
'onie fixed standard. If. now" continues
the doctor, "we adopt as our standard the
point at which there is no sensible difler
isncc between the air of an inhabited space
ami the external air, and agree that this
shall be determined by the efleets on thc
sense of smell, our next step is to ascer
tain from experiment what is thc average
amount of carbonic acid in such an air
space, from which we can then calculate
the amount of air required to keep it in
thal condition, lint as the sense of smell
is very quickly dulled, each air-space to
bo examined ought to be entered directly
from the open air."
liy observ?t ions in hospitals and bar
racks in diuercnt "nuts of the country,
Dr. Francois dc Cliauniont has ar rived at
conclusions, and obtained data on which
tobase his theory. Under the several
heads; Fresh - fair-not close-close
very close-extremely close, he records
his observations in a way which will en
able any one interested in the subject to
test them for himself. The conditions
laid down in the paper as "the standard
of good ventilation" are, that thc temper
ature should never bo very much below
sixty degrees-Vapor ought not to exceed
-1.7 grains per cubit foot, at a temperature
of sixty-three degrees, or 5*0 grains at a
temperature of sixty-five degrees-Hll
midtty(per cent) ought not to exceed sev
j cnty-thrcc to seventy-five-( lurhoniencid:
I respiratory impurity ought not to exceed
I O.O0?2 per foot, or 0*2000 per thousand
volumes. Another point established by
I this inquiry is that, where disease pre
vails, more fresh air is required than in
health; hence, hospitalsdcmnnd more pun
air than barracks.- Chamber'* Jon runt.
The Absurdity of Fine Writing.
People who use long words which they
do not understand, instead of short words
which they do understand, probably
imagine that they increase in some way
their dignity ami reputation by the pro
cess. When a man is hanged at New
gate, or a vessel goes down'at sea it is of
no sort of use to ask the reporter who
writes that the criminal or the crew were
'.launched into eternity" why he uses
the words or what he means bv them, lt
is useless to expect untrained minds to
abandon fine terms for simple ones, or
popular for exact expressions, but litany
rate people who are able to weigh the
force of words may begin by setting
tho example. Perhaps in the presence of
a style of poetry which has found of lati
no small acceptance, it is a mero crying
in thc wilderness to oller any such ad vice
as this, and when a writer who hus al
ready obtained a reputation as a critical*
scholar and editor of university classics
prefaces a volume of poety with an ad
dress "To the Beloved," beginning,
"My holy love of ninny ninnes
Whose face I have not seen,
With rosy dews and subtle Hunies
Anointed for a queen"
we ought rather, it may be, instead ol
finding fault with some prevailing forms,
of indefinitetu'ss in tlie use of words, to
feel thankful that there is any language
left which it is possible to understand at
all.- London Saturday /.'triai'.

M AN Ats Kits AND AUTHORS.-My first

matic critic ol' the Herald, and was sub
mitted lo the oidor Walhtek.
Aside from any other merits or de

hours. I need hardly add I had written
it in two days.
The elder Wallack was as shrewd ashe
was talented, lie did not intend to pro
duce my play, neither did he intend to
oflcnd tho critic ?d' ibo Herald, so in
stead of telling me to take the piece to
San Francisco and oiler it toa Chinese
manager as a short farce, he gave it to my
dear friend, Captain Jack Sefton, whom
I idolized, and asked him to read it and
tell me his decision.
The captain sent for nie and said, " I
have not read this, my dear Fiske, hut I
have weighed it. No good, mv hov, ho
good."
What could I do but accept the de
cisi?n meekly? I could not vow ven
geance against Captain Sefton, and Mr.
Wallaek's miine was not even mentioned.
Mut Lester put up his eye-glass and
smiled at ino as I lugged oil' my manu
script, ami I rather believe that I got
oven with him when la' produced his
''Rosedale." If not, why not?
Hrevitv came as my wits were sharp
ened, and at last Wallack did a piece of
mine (from the French, ol' course), and
then Captain Sefton ami I did another
piece together (also from tho French),
and all was happiness and joy; but I still
lirmly believe that my first original
comedy-although perhaps a trifle too
loiig-was the best thing I ever Wrote.
